Hello, I have flunked inspection because I do not have my air pump connected. I would like to remove it and have a motor repair person get it spinning again. Are there any tips or tricks to its removal? Thanking all you guys for your knowledge in advance! Tom
Tom, There are some threads on the old site archives on air pumps. I remember someone explaining that they are not terribly complicated, and that he had opened his up, cleaned and greased the (bearings?) and got his working smoothly. I was told by my mechanic to adjust the belt tension on the loose side, so if the thing ever did seize up, it would be less likely to take the cams out with it; which apparently can happen. I just replaced mine on a 79 308GTS. Take the old one to Checker and ask for a late 70,s GM (Camaro, Buick (ugh) air pump. You may have to take your housing off and put it on the new one; cost was 46.00 plus core charge. It is less hassle than messing with the old one which I almost guarantee is shot anyway!! These pumps were universal with slight modifications to mounting on 350c.i. engines in the GM family-trucks included.
What a PIA to get that thing off1 I had to remove the oil cooler cover to get the long bolt out of the swivel mount. If and when I get a new pump installed...I don't know if the air relief valve or the check valves or the "three-way electrovalvolie" is functioning properly. Can damage anywhere be possibility? I have know idea what to expect. Tom
