Well it seems the police have been cracking down on vehicles with no front license plates lately. I was the lucky recipient of a $90.00 fine for this particular infraction recently, so I decided to come up with a solution that I could live with. It is a mounting device similar in design to a trailer hitch that threads into the tow hook recepticle. It can be put on and taken off in under a minute. I was thinking of keeping it in the trunk and in case of need having it available to quickly install. ("OOOps ... I was at a car show the other day and must have forgotten to put it back on") What do you think? :

A Mondial at a car show? I think the cop would see right through you! :)

Seriously, though, this is a great mod. Did you make it? Can I have one?

How did I know I was going to get abuse for that comment. Ok... so maybe I was there as a spectator... lol.

It was my design, but a welder friend of mine made it for me. The hardest part was finding a hardware store with a bolt with those threads.

Great idea! Cops are cracking down in areas where they have traffic light cameras. In many areas, its just a fixit ticket, though.

Back in the late '60's a member of our local sports car club had a folding license plate bracket mounted in the nose (radiator air intake) of his Shelby Cobra. It was similar to the brackets used to hide the gas filler on GM cars of the day. At about 20 mph the air pressure would neatly fold the license plate flat and when he stopped it would pop back up.

In my area 2 plates are required but the 2 other states in the metro area only have 1 plate so it's fairly easy to leave the front one off. Recently there has been a push (spearheaded by politicians looking for revenue and cops looking for greater ability to monitor and control, ie. power tripping) to install traffic cameras so it might become a real issue soon.

That is a solid looking mount, but it appears that the plate hangs an inch or two below the front of the car.

Does it drag going in and out of driveways?

I am thinking of skid plates for my 308.

I have the same problem....the cops now look for any reason to stop a car for investigation....no front plate is just asking for it, esp. at the bridges and tunnels. what I did is simply screw the lic. plate frame into the lip of the spoiler it works well, is not lower than the lip of the spoiler and does not block airflow....I like your set up, seems like a lot of masterfull and ingenious fabrication...real cool... but definately have a front plate I used to simply put it in the front window but that is not permitted it blocks outward vision and then you get two tickets!

    Brilliant idea!

Personally, I think it would look better if centered in the body but I can understand that's not readily possible.

    Great job!

How about a bag of 11" black zip ties, about $5.00 at Home Depot for a lifetime supply. It is how I intend on going through inspection later in the month. "there's a front plate, let's see in the book where it says it has to mounted via screws....."

I still can't see the big deal here. Drill 2 holes , mount the bracket and then the plate. Simple

I think Ed found the ultimate solution for his, and also my problem involving how to mount a license plate bracket without doing any damage or drilling.

I would be much more comfortable with a solution like this than drilling at my front bumper with a $20 Black and Decker.

Example: You just paid $50K for a TR and need to mount a front plate. "Honey, where did I leave my Makita?"

    Not me.

    Great job, Ed!

Sorry but I think it looks like something from the trailer park. Does not integrate well with the front end of the car.

Funny that this old thread surfaces a year later. I agree that it looks funny on the front of the car and there could be a clearance issue. (I did "prebend" the bottom of the plate back to gain a little extra clearance) The purpose of this design was for me to have something available to put on very easily and quickly should I need it and something that wouldn't damage my car at all. I didn't care what it looked like because I have no intention of driving around with it on. I haven't even driven one inch with it on my car since it was made. I keep it in the trunk just in case. When I got pulled over last year for no front plate the cop asked if I had a front plate with me that I could put on. I had it with me , but no way to attach it. I thought of carrying cable ties, but I would rather pay a $90 ticket than risk scratching the front of my car with a flapping license plate. This was the best solution I could come up with.

Will it work should I get pulled over? I really don't know, I guess it would depend on the cop, but I probably have a 50/50 chance or better. AT least its just a fine and not a moving violation.

Beautiful work Ed! Does the 89 Mondial have the same tow hook mount? If so, can you put me in touch with your friend?

Ed, brilliant!!! Excellent use of "what's there". I've been trying to come up with an idea for central (position) mounting but those ideas would require some mods (albiet invisible) that I'm not sure I want to do on my 92 Mondial t Cab. We'll see.

    Cheers, Hank

Thanks for the positive comments! I'll ask my friend if he's interested in making more of these and what he would charge. He is a welder and mechanic by trade, but now is more into metal art sculpture. He's one of those guys who could go on that show "Junkyard Wars" and build something from nothing.
Anyway... this mount was built based on the specs of my car, so I don't know if it would fit other models.
