Im very keen on a 308 gt4 at Verdis, its over £20,000 and in great condition but with NO SEVICE HISTORY! Should that worry me or put me off buying the car? Any advice would be appreciated, Julian.

Possibly,... it will probably weigh against the car at resale time.

However, if you are comfortable that the last owners have looked after the car (and ideally have a pile of bills instead of the stamped up history book) then it wouldn't worry me in principle. Especially given the 12 year history of ownership by a Ferrari mechanic...

But a stamped up history book also supports the car's mileage- if you are paying a premium for a low mileage car this is quite critical come resale time.

    Robert.

    Julian,
I understand this car has been owned , maintained and stored by Karl Verdi for over 12 yrs.He also used to look after the car before buying it from the 1st owner. I've PM'd you with my thoughts on the matter so as not to get accused of bias towards Karl.

Tony, youre quite right, it is Karls own car and he simply hasnt got round to updating the service records yet but i suppose you cant do better than buy a car owned for 12 years by a Ferrari mechanic.....and hes offered a comprehensive warranty package! Sounds like a good bet so far, im just trying to arrange flights down to see it, Karl even offered to pick me up at Heathrow which i thought was decent of him.

If its been owned by a ferrari mechanic for 12 years........whats the problem? At least the guy is being straight with you. I know that there are reputable ferrari mechanics/dealers that would have forged paperwork, although the ferrari purist would never beleve that such things happen.

    Charlie,
Having spoken again to Karl at length it sounds like one of the best 2 gt4s currently available, the other one having a fsh at Nick Cartwrights, but yes you cant really beat buying a car owned by a Ferrari mechanic.

I bought my GT4 without any service history. Had a fairly major service by Verdis just over a year ago, and have only had to spend about £100 on it since then (Coolant pipe, ignition leads and bits & bobs).

I'd be pretty confident with the warranty, but do bear in mind the effect on residuals of any lack of service history.

Julian nicks had that car for some time stored. Good luck in your quest and post some good pics of it when you get it, i dont think we have enough gt4 pics, or 400is for that matter on the uk forum. In fact i cant ever recall seeing a gt4 on the road. Its all about the horse dude.

In light of your recent discussions with Karl, I'd say the lack of stamped history book was not a concern; but maybe he could write a letter for any prospective new owner declaring his position as a specialist, and the fact that maintenance was done according to factory specs etc. If I was a prospective purchaser, that'd do for me...

Sounds like a great car. Karl is very well regarded amongs most Fchatters.

    Robert.

This might sound like a silly question but why did Karl not just complete the service history in the book the same as he would have done with a customer's car i.e. put his stamp in the appropriate place whenever he did a service?

If he didn't think it appropriate to do that at the time then can he not stamp the book retrospectively ans bring the service history up to date?

How much is a full service history worth in monetry terms i.e. how much more is, say a GT4 worth with FSH over one without? Is it possible to quantify a FSH?

What may seem an obvious question, but if it is the car from verdi's and it was Karls for the last 12 years who is a ferrari specialist, could he not just back stamp the service book?? Like a car dealer would do if say you lost a service book and had a replacement. Or should i not ask such an obvious question.

It was just a general question with no particular car in mind. I just wondered how much a FULL service history is actually ' worth '.

To the average joe in the street, rather than a monetary value, I think it would make the difference between buying the car and walking away.

If it is Karls car in question, if it is someone looking to buy within the community, then it is a non issue. That is to say that I would be far happier to buy a car that has been owned by Karl for the past 12 years, but that he hasn't stamped a book for, than a car from a source that doesn't have that kind of reputation, but contains a book full of stamps.

But as has been mentioned before, I would probably speak to Karl privately about it regarding stamps.

Everyone is missing the point here.......

Just FORGET Verdis car at the moment.......

What i want to know is how much a FSH is actually 'worth'......on any specialist car......Ferraris in particular!

At the risk of getting this wrong again, a proper SH is PRICELESS. It shows the previous owners have carried out regular maintenance and should provide reassurance to prospective buyers that the car for sale is in a reasonable condition, wear and tear notwitstanding.
Unless i was buying a car from a specialist like Karl Verdi , i would walk away from any car that didn't have a SH. IMO, it's not worth the risk.

Hasn't this been partially addressed in this thread?

    http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28077&highlight=specialist

Someone get offered £1500 less on p/ex for their Fcar, because they had a specialist do a cambelt change, rather than a main dealer.

So that must be the start point when you try and quantify the monetary value of FSH.

    But what is FSH?

There are so many factors to take into account, especially with the older lower mileage Fcars. My 14 year old Mondial has a full service book - but has only done 26k miles, not all done exactly at the right time(as per servicebook) but evidence non the less of what Tony said -

"shows the previous owners have carried out regular maintenance and should provide reassurance to prospective buyers that the car for sale is in a reasonable condition"

Think you have to use a very large dollop of commonsense when looking for an older Fcar.

So in conclusion do i understand that no one would buy a Ferrari privately if it didnt have a FSH or at least a substantial service history but would consider buying it from a reputable specialist like Nick Cartwright or Verdis?

However a car with FSH from a private seller could still be dubious but from a Ferrari specialist near perfect, although one would assume a premium is included in the price because of this?

Finally i presume that a specialist car with FSH substantially increases the potential selling market in the future should it need to be sold?

Personally I would not have bought without a substantial service history. However do not overlook the part that a good independent specialist PPI report plays in buying an Fcar.

I think everyone has been commenting in this regard about cars that are owned personally by a reputable specialist.

I for one would not buy a Fcar that was not known to the specialist selling it. Therefore if it is known to the specialist he should have worked on the car and it should have verifiable service history from that specialist.

Don't follow your logic on this!

No, I would not buy a car from a specialist with no SH if it were just a regular stock car that had come in.

BUT... if it were personally owned and maintained for a number of years by, say, Karl or Nick Cartwright, then I would be happy with the purchase of said vehicle.
