Train Hits Car-Carrier Full of Porsches VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - A car-carrier loaded with vintage Porsches was struck by a freight train Sunday after becoming stranded on railroad tracks, officials said. The accident occurred about 3:45 p.m. near the Ventura County Fairgrounds, said Lt. David Wilson of the Ventura Police Department, who was at the scene. The car-carrier was "high-centered" on the railroad tracks and the driver was trying to maneuver it off the tracks when Wilson arrived. Wilson said he called to have train traffic stopped, but a northbound freight train came barreling down the track only moments later. "We were able to get the driver out of the cab, luckily," Wilson said. The driver suffered minor injuries while fleeing from the impact, Wilson said. The vintage Porsches "are close to totaled, if not totaled," Wilson said. "The train center-punched the trailer carrying the cars and split the trailer in half, and the cars went flying," he said. The front engine of the freight train came off the tracks and Union Pacific crews were called to the scene to get it operating again, Wilson said.
Does anyone know how many 356 Speedsters there are, and an approximate value for a well-cared for example?
There were two for sale at the show today in addition to two of the three here (price upon request for the ones that were totaled). The other two were $68K and $90K. I estimate these cars were in the $80-$120K range... -Wayne

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!! SOB! Now I'm gonna have nightmares about those poor little 356s. This shyt's worse than bonsai kittens or chihuahua juggling! Given the appearance of the wreckage and their value though, I'd expect to see these resurrected?? If not, trailer them on over to my place & I'll put 'em up on blocks for a few years till I get around to them
They could be resurrected, but I doubt it. The value of these cars centered not around the serial numbers, but more around their general condition (rust-free, straight, never been in an accident, etc.). Even if they are put back together, they will only be worth a fraction of their original value. This would make a costly restoration economically unfeasible. -Wayne
Made the news locally here even. They said the driver was frantically trying to move his truck off the tracks, he probably was trying to be safe and go real slow over the tracks and not bounce the cars and got stuck.
