I am trying to adjust the plunger depth to the proper level, on the FDs. I have removed an injector line, on top of the FD, and started the pump, with engine not running. It seems that I have to push the air flow plate down over a 1/4 inch, after contact with the plunger, to get fuel to flow from the hole. This is an 88 TR with KE-Jetronic.

Shouldn't fuel come out with ANY pushing in movement of the plunger?

    Thanks

You absolutely need the workshop manual here. there's pages of info about setting up the fuel distributors, and it's all critical and sensitive.

What problems are you experiencing with the engine, poor hot/cold starting, miss-firing, loss of power ?

To adjust the height of the sensor plate is a bit tricky and although special tools are required for centering the plate it can be done without them if you are careful. In picture #7 it shows where the plate should sit, but more importantly you need to check that the control plunger is moving freely, to do this you need to.....

Bridge the electrical safety circuit, switch on the ignition and let the pumps run for about 10 seconds and then switch off, this will result in control pressure acting on the control plunger in the fuel distributor. Slowly depress the sensor plate to it's full travel, you should feel the same resistance over the entire movement. Secondly move the sensor plate rapidly back to a position just in front of the stop, the control plunger follows this rapid movement of the sensor plate only sluggishly, and therefore initially looses contact with the sensor plate lever. It will be possible to feel the plunger make contact with the lever again - if this condition is achieved the control plunger can be considered to move freely.

If the control plunger does not move freely then removal of the distribution head is required for further work.

I have the WSM for the TR. While it gives an extensive explanation of the air-flow meter, it saids nothing about the plunger depth, in the fuel distributor itself.

During the major, I took the FDs off, to clean the area between it and the air-flow sensor. I replaced the O-rings and removed the plungers, so that I can see if they where scored.......they where not. When replacing the plunger, I forgot to mark how far the adjustable screw-in nut was screwed in. I left the air-flow meter alone. The car ran fine before the major.

The plunger securing nut is adjustable. This determines where the plunger will be in the rest position. This is what I was referring to, not the air-flow sensor.

    Thanks,

Okay, now I understand, with the system under pressure if you carefully depress the sensor plate you should feel 2mm of free play before it picks-up on the control plunger - 1/4 inch is far too much.
