Morning all....now that my '75 GT4 is smog exempt here in sunny California, I'm contemplating the removal of the smog pump and associated system components. Anyone with any experience / advice here?? Many thanks!!

You need a wrench and a BUNCH of brass plugs....LOL!

I've got one to do as well...thanks for starting this thread. Are you going with a new ANSA at the same time?

I think you'll need to change carb jetting, if so.....

I've never done this, but there are a few threads on it in the old Fchat archives (remember the threads read newest first)

On a related note: Does removal of the smog system really result in that much addidional power? When I first got my car, the belt to the air pump was disconnected, and I was told to reconnect the belt every month or so to "blow out the system". When I reconnected the belt, I did not feel any difference in power, so I just left it on.

Just remember that our smog laws are not written in stone and are up to the whim of those fine folks in Sacramento.

It is illegal to do the following:

    1. Remove dual smog pumps, one next to the 1-4 dizzy, the other 6 inches from the water pump.
    2. Belts, and brackets for all the pumps, and 3-way valve.
    3. Air injection rails, 1-4 and 5-8, plug up the 8 ports on the exhaust manifolds.
    4. Carbon canister, and just plug up the vaccuum ports on the carburetor vaccum lines. Put a gas filter on the fuel tank vent line previously connected to the carbon cannister, and just let it hang.
    5. Remove 100-lb muffler with built-in thermal chamber, and sell it on ebay. Or cast it off the side of your boat as an anchor. Replace with after market Ansa or equivalent unit.

It is illegal to do all the above.

Thanks to all of you for your superfast responses!! I agree that our smog laws are not written in stone. The legislation taht is on the gov's. desk as we speak relates to '76 year models and forward....but of course anything can change. I think I'll take my chances. Not really expecting to note any significant increase in power, but the engine bay will sure look a lot cleaner!! And yelcab....I'll try to remember that it is in fact illegal to do all of that...lol!!! BigTex - thanks for reminding me about the carb jetting...I think you're probably right.

It is better to wait until the equipment decides to fall off of the vehicle by accident.
