Scenario: I have this friend that "says" he has a master's degree from Michigan State University, yet he works as the mgr of a chicken joint. He has told us this is because he is looking for a job in his field, so the chicken gig is temporary. He supposedly got this degree in the early to mid 80's yet has NEVER had a job other than menial labor. He is actually a great guy; very gregarious, personable, outgoing, generous, etc., but my wife has always thought he was full of **** and now I am starting to have my own doubts. I found a website (www.degreeverify.com) that would allow me to do this if I had his s.s.#, but I do not. Does anyone know if there is a way to verify his degree (or at least attendance @ MSU) w/o the s.s.#? MSU directs all inquiries to this site. Thanks in advance, Jerry.

Why does it matter to you?

FWIW, I have a masters too, and I'm not in a related field. It's not an uncommon scenario

    Jerry,
You could always call the school if you know which one he attended. If it was in the 80's and not a huge school, in all likelihood, their records from that time are probably still paper and not computerized. They probably have a little old lady that will have to go dig through them.

That is most likely all that the service you are looking at would do, you would just be adding a middleman.

FWIW, I HAD a friend who sounds a lot like yours. Everything in his life sounded pretty incredible, exciting, and damn lucky. I started to have my doubts just like you. I did some detective work and found out a lot of it was either a spin on the truth or just an out-and-out lie. I found that once one lie fell, the rest came crashing down. It is not a good feeling to realize that about a friend, but it is also better than keeping getting pulled along on the ride he has you on.

Edit: Just saw that the school was Michigan state and their relationship with the website. They might be able to verify things on a department level since you know what his degree field was. The school has to keep some records on file, it would just be a matter of figuring out who can/will access them for you.

just call the school. tell 'em you're interviewing this guy and want to simply verify that he actually got the degree he says he got. i can't see why they wouldn't give you a YES or NO answer to that. it's not like you want his transcript, GPA, or anything like that. and i bet it's all in the computer - 30 seconds.

Women have a much better BS detector than men in general IMHO.

It matters a lot Tillman, think about it. If he's lying about this IMO it makes him totally untrustworthy, which is a bad trait for a friend. I don't care if he has a master's or a GED to be my friend, only if he's lying about it.

the should have an alumni list on thier website. i have 2 degrees and several tech certicicates that dont add up to squat. if you know his full name and about when he graduated, he will be in the records on the website. this is public knowledge and not private. i have my stuff all over my walls at home. if you know him that well, ask him why he does not display the diploma. my .02

if you feel guilty about calling up the uni and finding out for yourself, let a bystandard on fchat do the deed. pm the name and uni that the guy went to and one of us will call them up, verifying a resume for a job interview.

Did the guy go to Col. Sanders U for his undergrad? I'm with you, trust but verify. I think calling as an employer to "confirm the year he graduated," is certainly a legitimate request. The alumni office is another resource. A private investigator or online search could give you the info, if you want to pay for it.
Or, do you know of anyone in human resources? They could substantiate the info.
