I have an Ansa Sports exhaust on my 1982 BB512i and love the sound. I have heard a Boxer with a Tubi and thought it sounded good too. However, I was at Pirkle Auto Body yesterday and there was a BB512i there that had two el-cheapo "cherry bomb" type glass-pack mufflers that had been mounted where the OEM type mufflers go and it sounded GREAT. It sounded the closest to an F1 car I have ever heard on a street car. And, yes it sounded better than a Tubi. The cost, about $20.00 a piece for a grand total of $40.00 for an exhaust that sounded MUCH BETTER than a several thousand dollar OEM, Ansa or Tubi! Admittedly it didn't look as good, but on a Boxer and most other Ferraris the mufflers are mostly covered with a heat shield anyway. If I were in the market for new mufflers for my Ferrari, I would try cherry-bomb type glass-packs first before I spent several thousand dollars on a muffler from one of those companies that like to stick-it to us Ferrari owners. You only have about $40.00 to lose if you don't like it. You can always then spend the big bucks.

    Frank,

I would love to see a photo of "how" that shop properly hooked up those cherry bomb mufflers to both sides of the 4-outlet header collectors without capping off a bunch of them.

You can't just simply "bolt on" a pair of glass packs to the existing system.

Here's a photo of a Tubi install on a Boxer for reference. It's a bundle of snakes.....

PS: My Tubi should be arriving soon. I'll post a sound clip after it's installed and we'll see how it compares to those "glass-packs" you love. :)

I would also like to see how they made the muffler to all of the header pipes.

I started my car without the exhaust when I replaced my clutch and it sounded unreal, the stock exhaust does muffle the sound quite a bit.

You probably could get a cherry bomb to work with a good muffler guy to custom make some pipes, or even better maybe 2 Flowmasters.

There's a Boxer in Oregon which has a "flowmaster" style two-can mufflers/ exhaust that was welded up by the owner's mechanic.

I think it is the worst sounding Ferrari that I have ever heard. It sounded like a "truck" that needed a new muffler.

There's a real science in using the correct "lengths" of pipe, diameters, baffles and everything else, to work/flow properly and to sound GOOD across the rpm range.

In my book, Tubi knows how to get it right.

Well I am with you on this one, there is no way I can afford an exotic system, over the years I have made dozens of systems up, and 99% have sounded great. My system will have to come off shortly and I will replace it with a "home made", I am sure it will sound fine and I know it will be alot lighter than the standard one fitted.
As luck would have it, I met a guy who is into drag racing and to help finance it, he make manifolds, they are a real work of art and a fraction of the cost of OEM. When that time comes round, I shall be knocking on his door !

I had installed a Tubi on mine and later replaced it with a bespoke flow through using a Dynomax as a base. The Tubi, although beautifully built, sounds absolutely tinny by comparison. An Ansa salesman told me that many aftermarket Ferrari mufflers try to go for that higher pitched F1 sound which is in fashion right now - I was looking for that more low creamy sound from earlier cars so had to go it on my own and learned a lot by doing. And, there are some brilliant welding artists out there at some of these racing shops. Subsequent dyno showed the same hp. I agree there are a lot of options when it comes to exhausts.

Interesting comment about the welding, this guy (dragster man) who is a welder was telling me that alot of manifold manufactures make beautiful bends but often the welding, purging etc is not carried out correctly and problems arise. I have seen this guys work, and it is a piece of art ! even the joins on the inside are perfect, no mess, splatter, etc. If the price does not kill me then this is the way I shall go.

I went back over to look and see how the cherry bombs were hooked up and noticed that they used a 2 into 1 reducer on each side to connect the headers to the cherry bombs. And I'm not kidding, they sounded much better than Boxers I have heard with Tubis as well as my own Boxer with a two can Ansa Sports system. After hearing that Boxer, a Boxer owner would be a fool to pay Tubi or Ansa prices for sound alone. Only if you want the beauty of a Tubi should one spend that kind of money...and...you will then have a $high dollar$ set of beautiful stainless steel Tubis that don't sound as good as an $80 set of cherry bombs which are a lot lighter as well.

I think a Tubi on a Boxer is more like $5000-$6000 from the additional can and piping.

You could polish the cherry bombs or chrome the system if you wanted it to look nice the same if you used another brand of cheap exhaust.

I would say the stock exahust weighs 125+ lbs, the 2 center cans are very heavy then you have the 2 smaller outers, but by reducing alot of that weight your rear end ride height is going to rise also.

Can you get stainless Cherry Bombs? Or Smithys, or Purple Hornies, or any other traditional cheapies?

Or are you talking about Magnaflow or Borla stuff?

Smiles, you could always have them cermanic coated if you don't like the red color. I suppose red doesn't go well on Ferraris does it ? LOL

What's next Frank? Some Holley carbs and a Hurst shifter for your Boxer? Hey, the price is right...

    Just kidding. :)

I've heard a Tubi, and don't care for it. I thing the "Cherry Bombs" ( I have heard them on American cars, and they sound nice) are an innovative opportunity for some great looking affordable customization!

It appears (via profiles) that you are now the "THIRD" Mondial owner (or a previous Mondial owner) who has spoken up on this thread, stating that they would rather have "cherry bombs" or some other homemade exhaust system on their cars, instead of a Tubi Style system.

    What's up with that?

Could it be that mondial owners are open minded, self secure, highly intelligent, free thinkers? Or could it be that mondial owners are a bunch of cheapskates? ;)

I don't know, but Cherry Bombs/glass paks are just stamped metal so you could refinish them anyway you want.

The Import tuner crowd may have an equivalent Cherry Bomb type unit finished nicer and possibly have adjustability to it for noise levels depending how loud you want to be that day.

Hey Frank, you should have a cherry bomb set up built for your Boxer, then you could sell the Tubi. :)

Why not kill two birds with one stone? Run straight pipes with two 4" diameter polished FART CANS from Borla.
Great sound and up-to-date looks all in one!
