John, not trying to be ****** here or nitpick, i just see something here that would've confused me a year ago...

Iceburns, a GTS, as John said, stands for 'Gran Turismo Spider' or 'Grand Touring Spider' is different from a convertible... a 355 GTS is different from a 355 Spider... The GTS has the rectangular, removeable roof whereas the Spider has a convertible top that comes down...

Unfortunately, that's not the case; Pininfarina designed the 612, which is really confusing as to why they called it the 612 Scaglietti; the rounded indentation on the side is very reminiscent of s/n 0456, the Ingrid Bergman car, that was designed by Pininfarina...

This is the most interesting word, as it is kinda came from a person having Typhoid. It was picked up to mean some one who is a displays (almost rabid-like) enthusiasm with the similar (almost rabid-like) findings of clinical typhoid.
So the singular form would be tifoso or tifosa?

"Cavallo" is horse, "cavallino" is little horse, or pony, and "rampante" means prancing. Therefore, "cavallino rampante" means prancing pony.

LOL, sounds like fun, John, let's go...

From what i understand, the term "spyder" was originally coined back in the days of horse and carriage transportation; the "spyder" referred to the canopy (or lack thereof?) over the 'buggy'...

Big Tex is right, the 348 was the first Ferrari to bear the name "Spider", as opposed to "Spyder"...

Now YOU tell ME, John, how come Ferrari called them "Spyders" when there's no 'Y' in the Italian alphabet...? :)

a coachbuilder named Holmes in Dublin in 1860 who developed as a mix of the
Tilbury with the phaeton and called it a Spyder. The information parallels
that posted in a previous discussion on the digest; in alfa-digest v1 #183
(October 26 1995) Alex Angerhofer relayed a previous post in the italian-cars
digest by Aldo Vanini who had written "Mr. Archibald Holmes from Dublin,
Ireland, coachbuilder (real coaches, pulled by horses...) used for the first
time the term "spyder" (misspelling "spider") to indicate a new kind of light
coach combining the features of the tilbury (two seats) and of the
phaeton(four seats). Because the small body and the big wheels it reminded him
    of a spider."

    furthermore more...........
"In Italian, spider is indeed pronounced 'speeder.'
That is, a long "I." The reason it is pronounced as a dipthong in English (ai)
goes back to the Great Vowel Shift which occurred in the English Language
during the Norman occupation of England."

    now bring it ON ;-)

my .02 - even though there isn't a letter "Y" in the 21 letter italian alphabet, it is recognized and taught as a "foreign letter" and used in words like ypsilon. I think the other special letters are j,k and x? You don't see them used very often.

As for why Ferrari uses the letter y, I have no clue.
