is it possible to fit 315 tyres on the rear of a 512TR with standard rims? It just opens up more choices in terms of tyres brands.

yeah they'll fit. I've seen a stock 512 with 335's on it, but that was too wide and hung over the rim edge quite a bit in my opinion so didn't look good. I'd also think it would cause too much sidewall flex in turns, but otherwise they will fit.
