I'd back up nemero uno. I know every article says it, but the M5 truely is a fantastic machine. I'd highly reccomend it to anyone.

The first time something good has been said about the 348 model by Autocar.
There is small write up on 151 about the 348 as well.

The 348 seems to get hammered by people that have never owned one, but good things are said by people that have owned one.

 

Autocar had a Ferrari special issue maybe about a year ago (??) or so. They had an article on the 'Unloved Ferrari' - the 348 - the guy who wrote the article was the guy that tested it back in 1989 / 90, at the time he wrote it had a fundemental handling flaw, which he still agreed with, but ended up by saying its unloved tag was unjustified, he would certainly own one himself as it contained all the vital ingredients that make up the Ferrari magic.

 

I personally can't understand what all the negative fuss is all about regarding the 348. My favourite sounding Ferrari is still AndyHls 348... just awesume.

But hey whatever, great value car!

 

Just journos trying to be controversial. Most owners would not care about the handling flaw, or would learn to drive the car properly. Like a 911 in fact...

It ws meant to be quite serious on the limit in a track situation (wouldn't encounter it on the road - unless you were mad). So much so that apparently even Ferrari's chief test driver at the time couldn't recover it when it snapped... of course this is all from a magazine journalist, so maybe not 100% accurate.

The cure was the GTB / GTS version with the increased track, which I believe you can replicate on the standard version with spacers or some such??

As to the 911 - well yes there is a fundemental flaw with all models up to current - the engine is behind the wheels! But they eventually engineered the problem out with from 993 onwards. Still tricky but they can be driven on the limit.

 

I experianced the 348 handling problem on my first track day with the car,it was something that i was not aware of when i brought it, but the problem was easily fixed with Paul Hill spacers and challenge rims, a well set up 348 is a far sportier drive than a 355 imo, i now struggle to get it sideways on the track,There are a number of F chatters that have been VERY supprised at how well these cars handle. Do not believe what you read.

I want to confirm this. Andy's car was absolutely awsome.

I never thought for a moment that it was Andys Schumiesque drving capbility that was hurtling the car round at such speed
