    Eric is correct. Tinting the front passenger windows is ILLEGAL in the tristate area, past 70% light transmittance--which is to say, almost no tint. The rear windows can be darker, within reason, of course.

    Intersestingly, we were contacted from NBC news for a possible interview in our shop about tint legalities, as NYC's 3M Scotch Tinter. If it takes place, I'll let you guys know when it airs so you can see how nervous I'll be with the camera.

    To answer the second question, by design, even the lightest, almost clear window film will filter 99% of UV rays.

    There's one even cooler. A German made ceramic constructed window film. Superior to metal layer films, its ceramic properties will not interfere with our satellite signals for cell, nav, sat radio etc. It costs more than twice as much as convention film.
    It's the film of the moment.

    Now if they could perfect photochramtic tint...

    Just got off the phone with Lidatek. Spent about 1/2 hour talking with one of their tech guys. OUTSTANDING! He was telling me while we were on the phone, he was clocking local power lines a thousand feet away with a LIDAR gun. Think. Those power lines are black plastic, about 1" in diameter & he was measuring the sway in the breeze. If you think your stealth, you are not.

    Also, the art to this isn't being "invisible" to LIDAR. You want to be clocked by the officer- below the speedlimit - so you don't arouse suspicion. If you blew by him "invisible to his gun", you could still be pulled over by his estimating your speed or he could go after you knowing something was fishy. Do you have a front plate? He could pull you over just for that and check why his gun didn't register a speed.

    I thought you needed an FCC license to transmit and therefore Lidatek couldn't be a transmitter or transmit interference. I was incorrect. LIDAR is light and not regulated by the FCC (but by the FDA...another story), so it *can* transmit interference and be legal.

    Neat stuff. Best location for transmitter? 1/2" behind the front bumper. Being recessed in the grill helps to sharpen the interference pattern.

    just spoke to kit at lidatek, asked about the best mounting position. it's confirmed that the sensor should be in the center of the frontal area. middle of the front grille will be optimal.

    There is an additional caveat.......
    If the officer turns the radar off after tagging you for any reason, the Lidatek recycles for 30 seconds. Which keeps the unit from re-jamming the source. Which is good unless he looks at the gun wondering what's going on & decides to try again & shoots you again.....bingo. He got ya! Lidatek is recycling.

    Moral of the story: When the warning buzzer goes off, SLOW DOWN FAST!

    If two cops hit you one after the other, your tagged!

    Oh, and there's also another issue....
    Toyota SUVs and a few other cars now have "Dynamic Distancing".....LIDAR range sensing for cruise control so they don't crawl into another car's trunk. So these darn things will set off your Lidatek too! Sucks. Explains why I've had a V1 go off when 1) There's no cops around 2) No GM Middle brake lights are lit

    But the more I learn, the more I'm liking it too.
    Anybody have a LIDAR gun we can play with? :D

    As usual, Clyde, you're a wealth of information. Impressive. One reason for the 30 second cycle is to minimize such "falsies". I can assure you, however, that the current LE-30 has more narrow filtering for tail lamps and the like than its predecessor (the trusty LE-20), and the V1.

    Which brings me to another point (Kit and I have discussed this in detail):
    if the front sensor MUST be excactly in the center, how does the windscreen mounted V1 detect laser? The V1 is very effective at warning you for police Lidar (useless, of course, w/out diffusing)? My point is that the Lidar width is enough to trigger even a side mounted grille LE-30. In fact, if any of you get a Lidar gun, I will mount an LE-30 on the side of the front bumper and retain its effectiveness.

    I checked. There's no LIDAR units on E-bay :( I'll keep an eye out for them.

    I am building a home Radar kit with my son. It's not LIDAR, but it will be fun to fool with.

    so next time we are enjoying a run, all yoouse guy's radar dectectors go off & a 308 blows by.....

    Well, the SRX radar functions. If you've lived with a V1, you'll find the SRX display cheesy, and K40ish. Its laser diffuser eyes are believe are plastic.

    Lidatek's housing is beautiful black aluminum, with a bullet-proof glass eye. If you've seen a Lidatek in the flesh, you know what I'm talking about: it just feels solid, as the V1's casing does. The current LE-30's performance equals, and excels competitors laser jammers on the market. Of the 65 or so units we've installed, we have had no failures, nor has a customer received a laser ticket...
