Hello "F"-chatters, I was just wondering, In my 79 308, I have a few areas (3) in my passenger door (only) that look as if their slightly blistered (with the paint cracked slightly), it doesn't look like rust though. They appear to be a fraction of an inch above the bottom lip of the door. It almost looks as if it could have been a spotweld mark(s)? The reason I suggest this as the metal around the area looks to have been affected by the blemish as if it's been somewhat warped or stretched. The blemishes aren't significant, just something I've noticed while waxing within the right angle of light. I'm a real anal about rust having had a few cars with the cancer. When I punch a hard-pointed object dead center in the blemish, there is no give whatsoever. Living in Southern California rust seems to be at a minimum on our cars, except maybe at the beaches. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks, Chris.
They rust from the inside out. You can buy new aftermarket skins. http://www.superformance.co.uk/parts/dino3/body2k3.htm Only ~$50 each. + installation....
Yup..I have a very small amount of rust happening at the bottom front lower edge of the passenger side door. This winter I'm going to pop the door off and have the entire door refinished.
I had a 308, with rust "bubbles" starting to show in the lower portions of the door. I had it repaired, but the body shop guy stated that this was only a temporary fix, since, once rust starts, it just NEVER ends. The only solution was to replace the whole skin. He was right! Two years later, the rust started to show, again. He fixed it, and I sold the car........moved up. That is the problem with the old metal cars!!!!!!!!!!!
Got the same on my driver front door inside. Not on the outside skin. Question here is "has anyone removed the door hinge pins" if so how do you do it. Don't want to remove the hinges but just the pins and then have the door finished at the body shop.
I'll be tuning in for info on removing the doors, but to answer the original question... When I replaced the speakers on my 308, the magnets were covered in rust! There's essentially none on the outside, hence my curiosity about how to get the doors off and need for a big can of POR15...
Pre 1992 cars didn't have rust proofing. I've fixed rust on my TR in the doors, undrecarriage and other various points. Key is to fix it before it spreads.
FWIW I've had body shops DESTROY my hinge pins, banging them in and out. Maybe if they had thought to remove the grease zircs first......they also damaged adjacent interior trim panels as well...I was so proud.... Because the pins are hard to reach, it's almost easier to drop the doors off by unbolting the hinge at the front, behind the trim panel. ......not that either operation is a walk in the park!
308 doors rust like a sob...that last inch of lower door skin has absolutely no drainage...I'm the second owner of my car a 78 gts..have had it for 10+years...the original owner had the doors repaired after 3years for rust bubbles...no measures were taken at the factory to protect the lower skin..infact, I don't even think it was painted. when I bought my car I had them repaired again knowing that it would come back...and it is! even with careful/limited washings with water. Solutions: replace skins with late QV skins that are galvanized...or replace skins with fibreglass...I have an extra set of fibreglass skins if anyone is interested.
Has anyone Ziebarted? My car was when new. Don't know if that's helped any, and don't know if they'd give me the free freshening they advertise for life after 26 years, either! But I'm thinking of finding out....
most F-cars came with rust as a no cost option. Any car of any make that is over 10 or so years old is bound to have some somewhere. On older cars it's just a case of annual preventative care. How many late 70's or early 80's cars do you actually see on the road...of any make?
