I hit my GF's computer's open CD drive tray with my knee. Now my computer does not work as normal. A DOS window pops up and asks how you want to start the computer ( Normal, Safe, ) and then it dissapears!

If I DQ'd the CD drive, should this fix the problem? What do I do?

    Thanks in advance.

I think this can be chalked up to post hac fallacy. The prompt and the drive shouldn't be linked to each other. Select normal when asked how to start. As for Disconnecting the drive, give it a try, i dont think it'll have an effect though. It shouldn't but wierdeer things have happened.

It looks like you may have jarred the Hard Drive... Start it in safe mode - do a check disk and then reboot...

You may have a problem with the boot sector of the drive. You can also put in your Windows OS disk and have it try to solve the problem for you... But I would try the first suggestion first...

I had a similar experience before. I ended up w/ replacing internal CD player. Read your instruction or search the net, as you may be able to do this yourself. All you have to do is buy an internal CD drive, connect wires, and install the unit.

I didn't do search nor study, and took it to CompUSA, and was told the loop to launch a computer (when you start it, it checks a loop for HD, peripherals, whatever connected to all be launched together) was disrupted by CD player being disfunctional.

BINGO! I started it in safe mode, starting the computer tapping the F8 key. Then I rebooted and the main screen opened (But the computer took about 4 minutes to boot, probably looking for the CD drive before saying 'screw it'!)

    Thanks....Case closed.

If the machine wasn't shut down correctly it will start up in this fashion. Also, it's possible you damaged the drive and the OS startup sequence is Floppy, CD, Hard drive......

If the drive is damaged - it has recognized it and a configuration change could be in order.
