looking for a 328 longblock, motor just blew sending connecting rod flying. any leads would also be appreciated.
Check our sponsors...T Rutlands maybe. I remember seeing rebuilt long blocks for sale...or maybe in Prancing Horse Mag. If you can't find it post here and I'll dig it up...
i talked to rutlands (very helpfull) i also have a call into nick (Forza) i would also take a shortblock if that is easier to find at a reasonable price.
bo -- What(TF) happened? Did it splatter something in the top end causing the bottom end to fail, or is the top end still intact/OK?
Right, care to share your story with us so fellow 328 owners can take note? As in... for example... Did this happen at 5,000 RPM, or 10,000 RPM? --Mike
Don't know, but this might be what your'e after, it's a brand new block for a Mondial QV - US spec engine, factory part number 120591. If you're interested, send me a PM and I'll speak to Jeff Howe and get you a good deal on the price.
Ok here is the story on how to blow up a 328. we went to a ferrari track day at Beaverun in Pa. I have never been to this track before so my first 4-5 laps where done at about 75% of what the car can handle. the first lap that i started to get on it i downshifted to go into the first corner after the long staight, i heard a tapping noise from behind. it sounded like a rotary motor with an open exhaust. so a checked my mirrors and there was not a soul behind me, as i coasted into turn 2 and 3 the noise came and went . just before i had my first chance to safely pull off my rear tires locked up and and the motor started smoking heavily. after a tow to my mech. we found out that the connecting rod blew into the piston sidewall. i originally thought it was the belts because there is so much talk about belt failure. to be honest with you i am dispointed in this breakdown. i just expected better. the car has been maintain from day one. to answer the question about rpm, i may have hit 6000 on the straight before the corner. anyone for a winter project while i saerch of a 355 or 360?
Thanks for explaining bo -- I know you're not a happy camper right now, but I'm still not sure of your answer. If the top end was unscathed, why not just get a short block? Did something incompressible (like a valve or parts of a valve) obstruct the piston upward motion causing the rod related stuff to fail? Sure doesn't sound like you got anywhere close to out-of-bounds RPM-wise, but F cheated a little IMO when they didn't lower the 328 max permitted RPM spec vs the 308. (And wishing you good luck with the project -- we'll be here empathizing. I confess I've gone to the dark side and would just sell the remainder with the corresponding $ discount to the usual suspects )
steve, i would take a short or long block, i just happened to type in long block. i am seriously debating selling it as is, but what could you really get for a 87 328? any ideas?
You might be able to do OK selling it, if you're ready to move on. There are always folks looking for "Deals" on eBay--cars that have otherwise been very well maintained but had some issue (like a blown engine). It's their way of getting into an F-car for cheap (although I'm not really sure it works out this way). You could probably move it faster, but get less for it, selling it as is to someone in that "business". Very sorry to hear about the engine--that sounds very strange indeed. Steve, what would you have the 3.2 4-valve engine redline be?
bo -- I'd just deduct maybe ~$10K (for the engine replacement work/hassle) from what you think the reasonable value is if the engine were OK. (If the rest is OKish) I'd bet that you'd have a feeding freenzy at $20K and could get $25K, but don't expect over $30K (although as a Seller, 328s are hot so use that!). Mike P. -- I think that, at a minimum, they should've scaled back the 328 redline RPM to match maximum piston speeds at redline (to account for the longer 328 stroke). Additionally the larger 328 piston must be somewhat heavier (and you're moving it over a longer stroke) so that ups the inertial loads at the same RPM. Based on where they derated the TR engine to, I'd guess that a 328 should really be rated somewhere around ~7200 RPM for the same safety margin. 308 = 81 bore x 71 stroke: 7700 RPM 328 = 83 bore x 73.6 stroke: 7700 RPM TR = 82 bore x 78 stroke: 6800 RPM
15k cash?......... the Marrone 308 was loaded up last night and sent to a new home........ now i have no Ferrari again. been looking at carb GTB's. i have always liked the 328's
i know atlantaman has a highly modified 308 with a 328 engine from Trutlands, they are the only source i know of that seems to stand behind what they sell.
Dang.... can you put this 360 engine in there ?? 400 HP that would get you moving !!! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33615&item=7925216292&rd=1 just a $ 16,000 upgrade
Bo: Sorry to hear of your engine failure. I grew-up in Cleveland and was there last week--had I seen the post I would have contacted you while in the area. There was a guy in LA that had a brand new 328 engine with a used transaxle. The price was around $10K for both pieces. I think it was at Blackhorse motors 310-815-1957. email if this is not the right info and I check with my friend. Also, Ferrari of UK has a brand new complete engine on a stand in their showroom with a price of 6,500 Pounds (about $12,000 USD). It looks like it has been there for a while--perhaps they may deal? Malcom West (Ferrari of UK) may be able to help you arrange a deal. BTW, could you please email pictures/specifics about the car? Good Luck, Mark Image Unavailable, Please Login

Bo : I will speak to our sales manager and see what kind of a deal he can do. As far as I can recall the engine is for a Mondial 3.2
