I know this maybe a stupid question but which model ferrari's sound like a ferrari should, ie high pitched, F1 like scream as you wind them to redline?

Do all models dating back to the 308 and 328 sound like the newer models?

IMO the sounds are rich and varied.

Classic v12s like a comp Daytona at full bore at Goodwood this summer had an extraordinary sound.

My 308 with comp cams, big carbs and a Tubi sounds great, particularly when it is shooting flames on the overrun!

A "modern" Ferrari at full gun is a "wail".

The 333SP at full gun is a higher pitched wail.

Any F1 car, in person sounds, to me, like "tortured metal" -- a scream. It doesn't come across on the TV, you have to see it live.

I agree that vintage cars have more of a rumbling grunt and modern cars have more wail. They are both appealing.

Of course, how can you not like the wail? The F50 and 355 epitomize it, but people say the 430 is going to pack quite an aural punch.

Though I love the sound of the EC "straight pipe" crew's 360s (mine included), I have to agree that I think the 355 w/ a Tubi is definitely the most Ferrari sounding and is really a truly gorgeous sound.

If you saw Bad Boys II, I'm pretty sure the audio they used of the 575 revving its engine when it first appears was actually recorded from a 355 (...it didn't have that V12 growl, but instead the classic Ferrari V8 wail...)

I think the Daytona or the 275GTB/$ has the best FERRARI sound!

If you have heard a 250 Testa Rossa, or any of the older racing cars you would not be so impressed with the wail of the more modern Ferrari's. Most of them sound like "phttttttttt" eminating from the exhaust. Certainly the tubi adds a little bit of reality to the exhaust note. Any road car from the Daytona back has such a pleasant sounding note compared to what a Ferrari sounds like today. Formula 1, well that is different, and not comparable to a road car.

A 355 Spider went by me again today, not very impressive compared to a carbed 12.

A carbed 12 is what a Ferrari should sound like.

In the movie "Against all odds" the race between the 308 and 911 they used a carbed 12 cylinder as the engine soundtrack. Hollywood is clueless and fake concerning cars in movies anyway.

F1 cars don't sound like anything on the road, they sound like a jet engine breaking apart.
Older F1 Ferraris had 12s and a distinctive wail about them,
the original TRs, 250GTOs, 250LMs and comp 275s sound like true race Ferraris as they are and no 8 cylinder can compare to the 12's to those that have actually heard them, Enzo loved the distinctive sound and torque of the 12's which was why he prefered them in his race and flagship cars.

I have heard a 1972 365 GTC/4, and it sounds awesome! Nothing modern can compare. (except an Enzo, which sounds completely different).

Rent the movie "Gumball Rally" - you will hear the incredible 365 Daytona Spider, and you will be forever changed!

Anything with a well tuned Ferrari engine sounds like a Ferrari and sounds great. I went to the Times Square run yesterday, all the cars sounded wonderful. Very useful in scaring away the New York Pigeons.

By definitition, all Ferraris sound like Ferraris. I'm certain a 500 Mondial sounds quite different from a 360, but both 'sound like a Ferrari should'

I attended the Chrysler Speed Fest in San Diego this weekend.

There was a yellow pontoon fendered TestaRossa in one of the races.

It was being closely followed by a 4 cylindered car. Lotus 23 I think.
I could not hear the TR because of the "bark" of the Lotus.
I kept hoping for some separation between the cars so I could enjoy the wail.
BTW I was about 100 yards down the main straight. All the cars were in full song just about ready to grab 4 th gear. The Ferrari sound is wonderfull but it is not as loud as a lot of cars.
Of course it is tough to beat the sound of a McLaren Can AM car :D

    Erich
