Maybe very different cars, but very similar performance numbers and both proper sports cars....

As a long time Porsche customer, I'm put off by the variable ratio steering, the way too busy center console, the mandatory LCD screen, the wart on the dashboard and the fake quad exhaust tips on the S. And I was already smarting from the bath I took on the last 911 I owned (996).

I wouldn't think of trading my 360 for a 997S. Nor would I think of buying a 997S as a daily driver -- it just doesn't appeal to me.

This is a good one. I would agree with some of you. It might be a car one adds to but not replace a 360 with. I would not trade my 360 for a 997S. But I will say this. I have been considering a fun car to drive to work. I went and looked at the 997S. I do like it better than the 996. But I went and looked at several other cars. One being the Aston DB9, the other being the Bentley Cont GT. I have to say I like both of these over the 997S. So I won't be adding a 997S to my stable, but I will be adding one of the other two.

I can tell you this. My Porsche dealer has a brand new 360M in the showroom that was just traded along with a Stradale for a GT3 (long story). The 360M OWNS that showroom right now especially sitting next to the new 997 S and 996 Turbo S. You really can't compare the two and I wouldn't think there are many that would consider the trade to a 997 from a 360. Maybe an addition to the stable yes...but definitely not a trade for. This coming from a tried and true Porschephile as well...

    993 Guy,

    I am think of a 997 coupe instead of a 360. What's your feeling on the 997?

It looks like a great car and one that does not need the 360's maintenance.

    Any feeling on this?

    regards,

What maintenance? Probably 600-800 / year on a 360 for fluid changes. Belt change once every 3/5 years (3 if garage queen/5 if driven regularly) about $1200 at the dealer. That's not bad for a Ferrari!

I've paid hundreds of dollars for just oil changes on lowly 911s!

Performance wise, there's just no comparison, especially with the newly numbed steering response on the 997. I'd get a 360 any day!

Interestingly, the cost of ownership might actually be less for a 360 after you factor in the 997's keys-dropped-from-a-Learjet depreciation...

The 997 is a "nice" 911 and the most refined yet. However, it is not as visceral or as entertaining as the air cooled 911's and especially not in the same league as the 360. Yes, the performance numbers on paper may be similar and the 997 is a MUCH more practical car to have if you are going to use it for daily or semi-daily transportation. The 360 is a sports machine through and through and will come across that way in not only the way it drives, but also the overall experience of ownership. I have to disagree with the cost factor to maintain the 360...it is a LOT more expensive to run than a 911. Any 911 that is...unless you have a warranty. I run with quite a few of the EC members of this board and I have seen a number of repair bills over the past few months that would knock you out of your seat. Mind you, this is for properly maintained well cared for 360's. It's just the price that you pay to run these machines (and often)...but do be aware of that factor when you make your decision. If you have the means and don't mind the potential cost of ownership, then I recommend the 360 hands down.

What did you think of your Vanquish? Was it your daily driver? Apparently since the introduction of the DB9 Vanquish prices, (especically '02) have dropped considerably. Not that this is unusual for AM.

Just curious how many of these high maintenance 360s are F1s and how many are 6-speeds.

I would tend to agree that if you're interested in a 360 F1, you're in for some seriously high F1-related repair expenses if your luck isn't the greatest.

    Stick with a 6-speed!

I agree with the recommendation of the 6 speed, especially on the 360 (the CS is a different story...obviously). I was referring to both F1 and 6 speeds actually. Off the top of my head I can think of 4 360's that have had hefty repair bills over this past summer and on numerous occasions. Two were F1 and two were 6 speeds. I do think it has a lot to do with luck and who is obviously working on the cars, but I can say that it has slowed me from acquiring a Ferrari to add to my stable. My P-cars have been bulletproof (knock on wood) and having repair issues that keep the car sidelined (another negative about Ferrari ownership...it's never in the shop for less than 3 weeks no matter what's wrong), adds to the consideration factor.

    PCH,

Vanquish was a nice car. I did get ride of it before the DB9. It reminds me a lot of a 928. Yes, I know this is not the comparison Aston might want. The Vanquish is a great GT car. Yes, I drove it daily. Was fine. Wish I could have had it with a manual trans. The new car looks interesting as well as the DB9. I do admit the Bentley Conti GT is a nice car. It might be my next daily driver car. What are your thoughts?

Speedracer, what did you think of the DB9? More GT or more sports car? I've read various reviews and see different views and opinions on that question.

    Many thanks,

    Cavallini,

The DB9 is more GT than sports car. It makes for a nice cruising car. Lovely interior, the look and feel are terrific. Much more a car for two than for four. But still very nice to drive. The Conti GT is better as a 2+2 than the DB9. I am planning on driving both again this coming week.
