Who wants to give me a lesson on Ferrari F1 paddle shift? I've read my friends' manuals many times (for 360's and 575M's), but I don't think I can really understand until I give it a try. :)

I've heard some of the following common problems.

    - Engine stalling on the 2nd gear.
    - Transmission stuck in neutral (for doing LT/RT paddle same time TWICE).
    - Shift being too jerky (in low RPM).

Also is F1 really that bad? I never tried a Ferrari w/ F1 before, so I really can't compare it with the 6spd.

I want to try one as well. I have a 348, so if someone wants to sample how BAD a shifter can be in a Ferrari in exchange, I'm your huckleberry.

    Cheers

    Hey Kevin,
Guess what. - - You're invited to try the forrunner of F1 technology - by meeting "Rachel, the Valeo Mondial t wonder car". You'll see plenty of her in your rear view mirror - because I have no idea where I'm going, so I'll follow, especially at 6:00 AM in the morning. I get lost going to the bathroom even at noon!!
Really looking forward to meeting all the folks.
    Cheers, Hank

    Patrick,
Many people have a misconception that F1 is an automatic transmission and should feel "fluid" like one. NO! F1 is like stick-shift and it gives lightening quick action with throttle blipping and rev match.
    Here are some tips.
    1. Do NOT modulate on throttle when launching.
    2. Do NOT hesitate.
    3. Do NOT tap and let go on throttle.
    4. On soft launch, give it gas moderately. Let the clutch slip and bite first, then adjust throttle according to traffic ahead of you.
    5. On harder launch, stand on it. Clutch should slip really smooth.
    6. In a stop and go traffic, exert really light pressure to allow clutch to slip and bite.
    7. If your car starts to lurch, that means your foot input is modulating (due to driver's nervousness or Parkinson); you should ease up a bit on the gas to allow the inertia and momentum to neutralize, but don't take your foot off the gas.

You will have to feel your own car and its attitude. Like any manual tranny, you will have to learn its sweet spots. After a while, the F1 feels like the best thing ever happened to Ferraris and Lamborghinis.

If you ever come to my neck of woods, PM me. I will show you.

    Good luck!

    Jay

    Jay,

    Thank you! Good info!

I tried only one F1 paddle shift system, and that was a Williams F1 system on my friend, Dick M.'s FX (yeah, it was really amazing that my first Ferrari F1 paddle system experience was on the FX). I got to drive it only for a couple of minutes, but it was really great.

Compare to the Ferrari's there were some differences in Williams system.
    1. Paddles are steering-wheel mounted, insted of the steering-column mounted (the paddles turns with the wheels).
    2. Like the Formula One system, you can pull the right paddle to upshift, but also can PRESS DOWN to downshift (same with the other side paddle).
    3. The center console has (D-N-R) lever, instead of Ferrari's (N-R) T-handle.
    4. Has a rotary knob for difference shift settings.

I really liked the soft jerky feel when changing gears and paddles felt really nice (was much more natural than the big Ferrari paddles).

I've been in many Ferraris with F1 systems (including Enzo and 360CS), but never driven one with it, so I don't know how great it is compares to the Williams system. But if the Ferrari's system is as good as Williams, I don't know what not to like (I really liked it).

Thank you so much for the input!

I have driven the Ferrari F1 system in my friend's 360CS, it is veeerrry smooth, and extremely fast, what I loved the most is you hold both paddles down at the same time to go into nuetral. I also have to say that the brakes are the most amazing things I have ever seen/felt. I can post pics of the 360CS if anybody wants them.
