    My 83 BBi has an escalating problem as follows: when fully warm or even hot, I can't get the shift lever into the second or third gear slot. Instead, I find second gear in the fourth gear slot and fifth gear in the fifth gear slot. (I have 1-2-5 gears but in the slots for 1-4-5.) The clutch is relatively new (2.3 years) and low mileage (5K since new). If I shift slowly and gently our of first when the car is warm, everything appears to work fine. Also, no problem when cold/cool. One person suggested the clutch, but I rejected that unti lreading something sort of similar with the 512TR, the last response to which riflerunner made earlier today. Thoughts?

    I think it's a linkage issue.

    The 512 belonging to the other gentleman almost certainly has a clutch that is dragging for some reason so it will not go into gear . Your's however is a common problem with a different symptom and has been discussed many times. I'll bet your shift bushings are getting tired. When cold the transmission is rather baulky and you are shifting it with greater diliberation. I'll also bet that if you change those bushings and carefully adj the shifter all will be well. One thing I would like to suggest however, on more than half of the BB's TR's and 512's I have driven don't shift near as well as they can because the method used by Ferrari for establishing the adjustment of the internal linkage of those gearboxes was just plain crude. As long as you are doing bushings you should get in there and do it so that your shifter tune up is complete. It can usually be improved considerably just by removing the left front header and trans side cover and properly setting it up. That and choosing some good oil will generally make a good improvement.

    Yes, I do shift with greater deliberation when the transmission is cold. Also, when coming back from the Bay Area, it seemed like shifting very deliberately would keep the symptom from happening.
