Let's suppose there can be 999,999,999 social security numbers possible without reusing any numbers (which they say they will never do. There are nearly 300,000,000 people in the USA right now, which uses up almost 1/3 of the numbers. Since the system started, I bet 100,000,000 people have died. this leaves about 600,000,000 numbers possible to use. All things considered, they will be used up in 1 or maybe 2 generations.

Imagine that every computer software needs to be changed to add one or 2 extra digits!?! That would be far worse than any Y2K worries.....

And telephone numbers! we will have to add another digit or 2 to them pretty soon, again, unbelievable disruption in all software that has to be replaced.

    Thoughts?

You do have too much time on your hands... but I think software will be completely renewed in 40 years (1-2 gen). Try to insert a 5-1/4 floppy to run some DOS program today ... oops. :) Just a thought.

My nurse is sick today, so I took the afternoon off. It will be an 19 hour work week rather than my usual grueling 23 hours. :)

The phone problem should be easier to fix since they should be able to add another area code to it. They added 3 area codes in our area about 5 years ago. The SS one is another problem in itself.

    It's a legitaite concern.

Most software does not rotate out of use. y2k taught us that.

Sadly we won't be able to take advantage of these in our life times.

Population growth is almost nil and phone numbers are starting to get recycled as well.

Just pray your kids get the ssn of a dead man who died with a good credit score.

They don't reuse ss #'s. I was watching some show on it and they said they won't run out for something like 500 years.

500 years? do the math, a new turnover every 40 years or so, along with population growth, we have used 400mm already and I bet will use another 500mm in the next 80 years or so.

phone numbers we still have plenty and in case we are running out they just need to change the rules of how phone numbers are assigned:
    X # 0 - 9
    N # 2-9
    Y # 0,1
Previous phone plan : NYX NNX XXXX = 1,024,000,000 phone #s
Current phone plan: NXX NXX XXXX = 6,400,000,000 phone #s
possible future plan: NXX XXX XXXX = 8,000,000,000 phone #s

Social Security just add letters to it and you have a lot more then. no need to add another position plus 9 digits is what a person can memorize easily (proven) so i doubt that would change maybe in 500+ years as was said

It sounds like a similar problem that the computer world would have had if not for IP v6, which basically adds a couple more numbers to the end of the current ip version 4. So basically the computer ips will be changing from 192.168.100.100 (internal network ip as an example) to X.XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX (i may be wrond on this, but it's something like that). The plan for the added decimals is not only to ensure that there are enough for each personal computers, but there is also talk about giving your cell phone, pda, etc its own global ip address. They plan on implementing this over the next 10 years.
