I noticed in this picture that the tire has tiny cracks in the grooves. Is that standard wear and tear? Or is the tire brittle, and therefore should be replaced?

I recognize the treadlife itself is pretty thin, and that it alone may be grounds to replace the tire, but I'm more curious about the cracks in the groves.

    Thx.

My uneducated guess is that it's weather checked, caused by age and atmosphere. I certainly wouldn't race it, but normal driving should be OK. You are going to have to replace pretty soon, anyway, based on tread depth.

    Hi............

Think that the cracks are a sign of age......oxidation and ultraviolet light damage.

Use a durometer, a device which measures rubber hardness, to assess the conditon of the tire. If tire is more than ten years old, time to throw it away, unless you will use it only for concours presentations.

How old is the tire and where has it been most of the time? The cracks look like oxidation from UV, ozone, and other pollutants in the air. Usually this happens in metropolitan areas and takes 2-4 years.

This is often more obvious in the sidewalls. What do they look like? If they are OK, you're probably all right as far as cracks in the tread.
