apologies for the o/t post - can anyone give me a first hand perspective on Longboat Key in Florida please? Am looking for the 'insiders' view to places to go, places to avoid and general things to look out for (restuarants, bars attractions etc).

Any help would be very useful.

    Thanks

Longboat Key.. bars? :) My aunt and uncle have a condo there. Amazing place actually, but it's pretty much all old people. The beaches are amazing, the houses are amazing, and um. Well. It's really nice if you're going there for a relaxing, do-nothing kinda vacation. There's a great little restaurant on a pier on the sound side that has THE best mahi-mahi sandwich. I was just down there a few weeks ago and it was closed though.. some areas still seemed to be recovering from the hurricanes. St. Armand's circle is good for shopping I guess, and it's right across the bridge from Sarasota... I'm not sure how old you are, but for a younger guy like me, Longboat Key is just a good place to get away from it all. Not sure what kind of nightlife and excitement you can find there.

There is really more going on in St. Armands and Sarasota, just a stones throw from LongBoat Key (over the south bridge). Just about anything is good. There is a lot of store competition so if it is still in business it must be good.

thanks for the steer guys. Is Captiva Island or Sanibel any better? Am looking for soemthing which is not too pedestrian but at the same time not like a clubbing mecca?

    thanks again for your help.

I grew up around that area and the beaches are great. Nice sand and water with fewer tourists. Definitely a quieter, older clientel. You can go south to Lido Beach around St. Armands just a couple of miles away for younger crowds. North Lido can be interesting since there are still some topless women sunbathing. Siesta Key is an even better beach and is in Sarasota so just 5 more minutes south. It was voted as having the best sand of all beaches a few years ago. Also a younger crowd. If you want quiet, stay at Longboat. Anna Maria Island is north of Longboat and still a short ride. Very quaint and has a nice bistro. St. Armand's circle is just south of Longboat and has shops and restaurants. The Columbia restaurant has Spanish food (not Mexican) so try the paella. In addition, a new Ritz Carlton was built just east of St. Armand's and has a decent dining room for fine dining. There are other good restaurants in Sarasota but not much in Longboat itself. Mostly condos on Longboat. There is a Ferrari gathering in St. Armands in January so you might want to check that out. Always a good show. I like this area but I am prejudiced since I grew up there. Sanibel and Captiva are nice also.

There is also a Ferrari dinner the first Monday of every month in Sarasota, always at an Italian place. A good time is always had by all.

The Murcielago is fantastic. I tried to get my wife to trade her bull for my red car but no joy.

There is nothing to do on Longboat Key unless you are preparing to die! (Sorry Lou)

    Try Lido or Siesta Key.....
