Can anyone shed any light on the Ferrari´s Enzo himself owned (or made frequent use of)? I´ve stumbled across a 250 GTE (or 330 America), a 330 (365?) GT 2+2, a 330 GTC and a 275 GTB. Most of them in silver. Is this in any way correct? Anyway, anyone can help me make the list correct en complete (type, color, perhaps even sn.)?
These are the ones that I know of: 250 GTE (Silver) 400 SuperAmerica (Green) 330 GT Series I 330 GT Series II (Silver) 330 GTC (Silver) And I am sure a few more before or after these ones.
at consorso this year, i was parked next to a guy who claimed his cal spider belonged to the old man himself at one time in reality, he owned them all !
Why was this moved...? Enzo apparently owned an F40 at one time... Unbelievable; this belongs in general... Anyway, from what i have - and with Ausbrooks' help - here's the skinny... As Lustman has pointed out, Enzo at one time owned a 250 GT Boano Coupe - later discovered to be an alloy body; s/n 0523 GT... Enzo also apparently owned 3097 SA - a 400 Superamerica that was identical to a Lusso - but was NOT a Lusso... The body was bigger all around and the wheelbase was longer... It was sold to Enzo on 05/03/1963 and OFFICIALLY scrapped on 09/13/1963 (someone check to see if that was a Friday)... This is where the notes get confusing - maybe i wasn't reading them right; the owner apparently purchased the car from Enzo while it was being completed (maybe finalized after being scrapped...? After the accident...?)... There was about 12,000 miles on it; it was in an front/rear accident, then restored... At some point this car was renumbered to be 4031 SA; at one point, it was claimed to be 4715... It was hidden in a Colorado railroad museum and then later restored cosmetically and mechanically...
330 GTC: Enzo Ferrari owned the prototype, #6431. Not a GTC series serial number, because it was built on a 275 GTS chassis, with a 4-mount 330 motor and open driveshaft. Also had 275 GTS seats, unique instrument panel and, door panels, and rear luggage area. (courtesy of Dyke Ridgley, article in Cavallino #76) james
FWIW, 13/SEP/63 was a Friday. So to make it short, there are three cars: 400 Superamerica 3097/4031 400 Superamerica "Lusso" 3097/4715 250 GT/L Lusso 4715 I don't think the "Lusso/SA" ever used s/n 4031, it was just a new number given to 3097SA when it was sold off. Maybe they wanted to give it a clear identity so Crepaldi would be able to sell it off without any unpleasant questions. AFAIK, Enzo's "Lusso/SA" was built by installing a modified Lusso body on a chassis with 2500 mm wheelbase. I don't have proper pictures of this car, but think that the modification was done by extending a normal Lusso body behind the doors and modifying the rear part. The chassis *MAY* have started life as (intended) 4031SA, but this is just a wild guess. I also think that they used s/n 3097SA with this car as they happened to have the plates and papers around at the time. Further on I think that the "official scrapping" just indicates this registeration was cancelled and the car was sold off. It is confusing as there another car with 4715GT (a standard Lusso) also seems to exist. I also think this is the car that was once crashed mildly. Maybe somebody a the factory thought that this car had never been built and the same chassis number was then used for the "Lusso/SA" when it was sold off. Best wishes, Kare
These are pics of 3079SA. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Fascinating stuff. Thanks guys. The F40 puzzles me. Enzo was reaching his nineties by then and had troublesum eyesight. What on earth could he do with an F40? On the other hand, owning and using does not necesseraly coincide. Any sn on this car? I came across I 275 GTB model (1:43) which was labeled as Enzo´s private car. So I presume this is incorrect? Best wishes to you as well kare!
You mean 3097SA, of course - even though I have no idea what s/n it is using today. I am aware of these photos, but would love to find a perfect side view; then it would be possible to analyze the eventual differences to a standard production Lusso. Best wishes, Kare
That of the F40 can't be true.... Enzo was already very feeble at the time that the F40 was presented. He had to be escorted on both sides from the car to the presentation....
I vaguely remember a television commecial for tires that showed an F-40 blasting away, really tearing up the road, and then coming to a stop. With the help of a quick edit, out stepped Enzo. Does anyone else remember this commercial? Could this be a source of some confusion? --Matt
Seems very hard to believe IMO also. He possibly could have owned it, but Italian legislation at that time (don't know if this still is the case) forbid anyone above a certain age (70?) to drive a car that could exceed speed limits by a large margin.
Yeah, i know, i was just b!tching... Kare, thank you for the added information... Boudewijn, thank you for the pictures... After additional searching last night, Wayne and i came up with at least 7 more cars Enzo was purported to have owned... It's fascinating stuff, but now i have to figure out how to decipher what's true and what's merely "purported"...
So, start deciphering! So, if the F40 is just NNO *****ing (...), then Enzo stopped using his own product well before he passed away. Didn´t he used to drive Lancia´s on a frequent base?
I bought 3097SA around 69 from my friend Asa Clark, who bought it from the first owner, whose name escapes me. (We'll call him "M"- an Italian name; he was the owner of tha Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica.) M claimed that he bought it direct from Enzo, so its probably true that it was an "Enzo" car. It had a 98.5 inch WB, and was standard 400SA mechanically, so far as I know. It was a beautiful driver, with 12,000 miles only. But it had been poorly repaired as the whole back end was coocoo. The only S/N for this car was 3097SA. Sold to Kirk F. White associate Jerry Craft, who sold it to Colorado. Sorry, I gave all my pics to Warren Fitzgerald, long deceased. Another "Enzo" is the green 400SA owned for years by my friend Jim Truitt, S/N unknown to me.
