    Hi,

I bought a GTS back at the start of the summer. All has been fine.

I recently put the root back on (due to the cold weather coming...), and have been driving around with the roof on.

I notice with the roof on, that the car makes alot of "squeaks" when I go over bumps or corner. I think this is due to the roof rubbers squeaking together.

I was wondering if anybody else has this problem, and it there is anything that can be done to fix it. It's not a huge deal, but does make the car seem 20+ years old, whereas it's fine with the roof off...

Can you "lubricate" the rubber, or something like that to make it not squeak ?

    Any suggestions welcome

    Thanks in advance

    Jason

    Jason,
Cleaning all moldings to make sure that they aren't brittle is a start. Then you can check the foward alignment pins to see how much play you have in the roof when seated. Increasing the pin length will seat the roof further back towards the rear, compressing the rear edges, and reducing the windshield frame contact area. Try to determine if you are having rear or forward squeaking, and adjust accordingly.

    Regards,
    Steve

Don't know about lubricating the rubber but at an RV shop in Baton Rouge I found a rubber restorer or sealant (don't have the tube and it was about 6 years or so). I had a 91 300zx that had a squeak/drip problem where the tops would meet the winshield pillar, the rubber was like a sponge so to say. After I massaged that into the gaskets and allowed to dry per instructions on the tube I was very pleased with the results, not a drop of water and no more squeak!!!

As far as a 308 goes, could be a different story, the pin adjustments sound like a good start. Maybe you could try the sealant. Just putting in my .02 from my experiences, hope it helps.

Seems like I've read about this complaint before, maybe do a "308 squeak" in the archives.

    Good Luck,
    Josh

    Jason,

79 308 GTS here and the same problem. I have tried the silicones and lubricants and they work temporarily but the squeaks come back pretty quickly. Had not heard of the pin adjustment and will try that one- who knows it might work. I think that generally this is what you get with a GTS and you might just have to live with it. Don

Jason. I have a 1988 328 and once the cold weather comes I get the same squeeks and rattles upon hitting a small bump in the road. Interestingly these go away once the car warms us. It is not engine related because they only occur when the car is in motion and goes over a slight bump. I now just ignore it mainly because I put the car away for the winter and the problem never arises in the warm weather.

i recently purched a 78 308 and had the same anoying problem. asking a knowledgeable friend about a fix he suggested baby powder on the gaskets.
taking the thought of baby powder on the gaskets to be messy and not permanent i went my own route. the noise was comming from the latches, metal to metal , so i cut a strip of 1/16" thick neopream tape and placed on bolth roof latches. NO MORE SQUEAKS. ie/ the foam tape used, same stuff put on objects not to scrach table tops.

small amount of vaseline every few months. works well. it also helps keep water out when you (gasp!) drive the ferrari in the rain. i did this on my old GTS. now i have "B" :)
