OK, I have a budget of up to £26K - need something that is quick, great handling, not too heavy & can be used to go abroad in reasonable comfort (apart from what I have already).

My thoughts are a Mk2 Elise, VX220 Turbo, Griffith, RS Focus (not Caterfields).

    Any sensible thoughts???

Geoff, you really don't know what you are missing out on then! 964RS is a weapon.

Griffith will be a pile of poo as a trackday car, VX220 Turbo is a pretty good option, although going abroad is going to be a bit of a no no I should imagine...

I would also be thinking M3

    I really don't want a Porker!
Had an E30 M3 already. Have an option on a 280BHP VX220 Turbo which is pretty swift.

An Elise has better balance but the power is not as good (less weight I know).
As weight is everything I can only think of these 2 at the moment.

The only other thing I can really think of is a Mitsubishi EVO RS - excellent on track, very little weight, lots of grunt, fairly comfy - just somewhat lacking in character, and maybe wrong image for some people??

Huge running costs and insurance rule that out I'm afraid + 4WD is no good on track ultimately. I used to pass Scoobies etc in my S/C Saxo!!

Grade-a subaru www.gradea-subaru.co.uk have an exact wrc replica done 1100 miles for 25k, think it's under salvage (although it isnt) with cut slicks, quick rack, brembo's etc, the ultimate trackday wepon. If you have never driven a well prepared subaru, I promise you that if you do, you will be hooked. one sensational car that driven by a normal driver will out do an excelent driver in a much better car.

I'd look at a mk 2 Elise. I think it'd fit your criteria well, and provide scope for modification as time progressed. I had a bit of a tussle an Elise the other night when I was out in the 355- most impressive - looked a sweet handler.

Or how about a Lotus 340R...

I must confess I cannot understand your reluctance to consider a 911- is this based on experience, or just opinion? a 964RS or a 911CS (if you can find one) would give real track thrills, plus touring ability and relatively low running costs.

    Robert.

You're going to be passed in any one of those by people in 7s...

What about something like an Alfa Giulia Sprint? Or Lancia Fulvia HF Coupe?

Should leave you cash to keep it in top nick, no tax if you buy an early enough one and pretty as a picture. And because they're classics, you won't care too much about the ultimate speed you're going - they feel fast at slow speed!

I got blown away by a VX220 going through Andorran Pyranees on the 2003 Cannonball Run and have tangled with a few in the UK with mixed results. Driven them on track at Palmersport - Cheap, tremendous handling and therefore v.quick if it's not too straight.

I remember doing a track day in an XK8- the pesky 7s were unsurpringly all over me in the corners, and the track-day ettiquette said if someone was clearly quicker than you in the corners, you had to let them pass on the next straight. This was extra aggravating as I'd have to sit behind them as they screamed along a top speed along the straight when the Jag had plenty of power to pass!

How about a scooby or an EVO? Great fun to drive, I have a prodrive scooby and it's a lot of fun. Try http://www.dhcars.co.uk/, Spec C cars are very quick, about 320 BHP I think

    Depends on the 7 Robert.

Have you ever had a go in something with 200bhp+? :)

Also, which circuit? Off the top of my head I can't really think if any in the UK, save perhaps Silverstone, where the relative lengths of the straights would hamper a well sorted 7 in that way.

Boxster S? A this time of year you should be able to get a reasonable spec car at sensible money. Also, very practical, rear drive for track fun, reasonable running costs and good residuals.

    Good luck.

    Mark.
