Dealer quoted $5300 for replacing all 4 brake rotors + pad on my 360. About right?

True, but the operation of a clutch is much more technically complex than the operation of the brakes. Also, if it just the pads that are worn out then I can understand, but the rotors at 15,000 miles?? And if this is common among the 360s, this sounds more like a design flaw than anything that is caused by the driver. If the rotors are truely worn out by 15,000 miles and they are OEM Brembo, I would definetly be looking elsewhere for a replacement set as the OEM Brembo set is obiviously not practical for a road car. This is just my own personal opinion that is.

 

The 360's have been notorious for it and are one reason I dont use OE brake parts. For the article I co-wrote in Forza prior to the national meet in Monterey we even went to the trouble to tell people (primarily 360 owners) to bring a spare set of brake pads for that reason. We have had in this area a problem on very aggresively driven 360's going through brakes at an alarming rate.

 

There are some really good technical white papers at stoptech, which I read while investigating brake upgrades and problems. I am not that technical and cannot shed much light into this because of their complexity but from all the stuff I have read there are some extra care that must be employed with high performance brakes. If it is just the thickness it is a no brainer and a simple measurement will determine the need for rotors or if there are cracks. But I believe you could have proper rotor thickness and no cracks and yet be needing replacement. So I would also consider the operation and care for brakes highly complex and one that needs reminder.

 

Stock factory brake rotors are $900 each from the dealer. Pads are $550 an axle set. Add in the labor and there is your quote. It will be the same from any dealer. Of course Girodisc has the 2-piece direct replacement units for $550 each, 4 pounds lighter and with curved vane rotors, in stock. We also have Ferodo DS2500 pads for $125 an axle set. The front rotors you can change by yourself in about half an hour. The rears are a little worse because of an external parking brake caliper that needs to be removed before you can get the disc off. You need a 10 or 8 mm allen wrench that you cut down to almost nothing to get the damn bolts out of the paking brake caliper(PBC). After that, you need a giant pair of channel lock pliers to ROTATE the piston back so the thicker new rotor will fit inside the PBC. After that you are done and happy with all the money you saved. You can purchase these directly from our new shopping cart online. Castrol SRF is at the lowest price I have seen anywhere. We've got the Titanium pad shields as well for that car at $100 an axle set.

Yeah, but ya gotta remember your supporting the racing team, and Micheals wallet. If 500 per rotor seems reasonable (egads!) plus pads for a total of about $2260.00 (gulp!) in parts, your telling me it takes 30 plus hours labor to replace them? Im figuring 100 hour labor, if thats reasonable (egads!) Thats like almost 4 days of work!

Must be the same dealer that wanted $9k for a 30K service. Must want to keep us bottom feeders away from the high rollers.

 

Wow, I didn't realize that. The exotics are really getting out of hand here, they are not designing with the owners in mind at all. I have heard in the past that a lot of companies or owners makes the mistake of using "high performance" pads thinking that it will improve the braking on the car. Which the pads does, however, the performance gain are somewhat artificial, similar to the use of super sticky tyres on the NSX in order to achieve higher G's during cornering. Except that the tyres will be worn in 5K to 7K miles, which to me is not acceptable for a road car. Anyway, my understanding is that in those cases, it is a trade off, either you wear out the pads first and frequently, or you wear out the discs prematurely. If I were in Jim's situation right now, I would definetly be looking into upgrading the system all together with an aftermarket system, which may even be cheaper than the OEM set.

 

I am not sure how you added and subtracted to come up with 30 hours of labor. But here it is: if you go with oem parts, parts alone would cost about $4700 or so, and leaves about $600 for labor which at $150/hr in California equals to four hours. I know this number also includes brake fulid change and bleeding.

 

You may have answered this before, is the hat aluminum? What is the replacement cost of the disk assuming the hat is re-usable?

 

Hats are 6061 Aluminum. Hardware is NAS high temp Stainless. Rotor replacement price is $200 plus you should replace the jetnuts. They are 25 per rotor additional. Hats are normally reusable at least once or twice.

I don't know the specific cost of the 360 rotor but I can tell you from experience that the markup by dealers on Brembo rotors is anywhere from 100-150%.

On my 355 Challenge the dealer cost for a set 355 Challenge rotors was $367 per rotor from Racetechnologies Inc. which is the North American Brembo distributor. My dealer marked them up to $650 per rotor. The rep at Racetech whom I bought my rotors from at cost told me that the west coast dealers were still charging $800-$900 per Challenge rotor.

The 360 Challenge rotors were being sold at my dealer for about $1000 each.

Racetechnologies used to sell to non dealers and I got mine in bulk (10-15 rotors at a time) but they no longer sell to anyone but official dealers.

The biggest cost is installing them on the hats which most shops charge 2 hours for front and 2 hours for the rear (actually takes about 30 minutes for each end).

I don't think the dealer is personally ripping you off, I think that's what they charge everyone.

Ask if you can supply the parts. Ferrari of Washington allowed this on my car.

Try Stillen at www.stillen .com.I got a set of Brembo Sport Rotors and pads for all four corners for my F355 Spider for 1300.00,not inc. shipping.They are in Costa Mesa,Ca.Right in your backyard.The rotoes are repackaged with Stillen boxes but are stamped Brembo on the rotors and look like the Ferrari Challenge rotors.Will fit stock calipers.They're Metal Matrix pads look like repackaged Ferrados.

 

They don't list 360 brakes as being available. I'm personally very interested in Girodiscs. I hope they do well as a brake and a company.

Dear Friends, fool is a relative term. The mark up to you from the dealer pales in comparison to the mark up charged to FNA by Brembo...

 

The price does not seem high at all. What I would do is get a second opinion. two set of front pads in 15k sounds excessive. And all four rotors worn out . I do not think so.Do you have brake pulsation?If you wore out two set of pads in 15k you are doing some heavy braking due to heavy accelleration. remember all the power the engine produces is dissipated in the brake system to slow the car down. Sounds like the dealer needs work!!!!!!!!!!

 

No, the dealer saw all of the Prada clothes and accessories and priced it accordingly.

If Jimmy dressed (like me) in blue jeans and a sweatshirt, the quote would be less than half.
