Can anybody confirm the original finish on the rear firewall (between the engine and luggage compartment) on an early 308 gtb. I want to clean up the engine compartment while I have the engine out for a rebuild. It looks to me like it was finished in an aluminum colour over top of a thick coating similar to the fuel tanks but mine is so dirty that it is hard to tell for sure.

Any tips or pictures would be of great help. Thank you in advance.

My 308 GTB iengine bay is finished as you describe - aluminium over a ripple finish. To the best of my knowledge this is the original spec.

    Good luck with the re-build!

When I had the engine out in my 308, I rolled it over a large tarp and sat in there night after night with degreaser and a brush. I think it took forever. When done, I went to a auto body supply store. They made me small containers of three part paint (One ingredients was a hardner), silver. With that I bought a 6 Oz spray bottle with an air cartridge. I sprayed both firewalls and the gas tanks. It looked great! Before you put the wheel wells on, pick up a can of black rubberized undercoat and spray them also.

Has anyone come up with a good way to replicate the coating on the gas tank / firewall? I used a rubberized rockguard which I painted over with aluminum paint but the texture is smoother than the original which is a very thick coating.

    thanks

I have a gt4 and the firewall is in fairly carppy condition. it is cracked and black, I was going to try and refinish it with an overlay cover when I remove the heads in a month or so to replace the exhaust valves.

Does anyone know the appropriate materials to use as a cover and where they can be located ?

Check the EASTWOOD COMPANY . They had a thick rubberized coating that I used on a 1960 Pontiac a few cars back :)

Check out www.summitracing.com for heat shielding designed for application to firewalls and floor boards. Used in cars that continuously run between 8 and 10,000 RPM. Gets a little hot in there You can correct the finish to your liking later.

Eastwood is excellent for hard to find items and you can also check sprintcar supppliers.

That coating is a Wurth product. I just did the firewall and gas tanks on a 246 and you can't tell the difference from original. I really think it is the same stuff. It's a semi-fiberous body shutz and uses a special air-powered gun that screws on to the product can. Comes in beige and black. I still have a few cans. I will post the product number tomorrow and you can call Wurth USA.

The early US GT4's had 3 aluminum sheets over a crackle finish wall painted aluminum. Lot's of scrubbing and then new sheets of aluminum went in.
