That's not some 'pretty guppy'....that's a full-grown maneater that can, and very well might have, posted a very real danger to swimmers. Mako sharks are aggressive, and have been known to attack humans without provocation. Look at the size of that fish, and look at the size of the fisherman standing next to it - I would not want to be in the same ocean with something that large. What moron thinks punching a fish that large in the nose would even be felt, let alone effective? If this shark swam up to you (and didn't bite you clean in half on the first pass), you'd piss your swim trunks and paddle toward shore like a Cuban refugee on steriods.

Since the fish was harvested using legal and somewhat humane means, and will be used as food, I don't see the ethical puzzle here.

Yeah, but it'd be cool in your new pool...keep those pesky neighbor kids @ bay. Maybe you can get the valet guys from the club and the joyriders to come over for a pool party?? :)

It is ok, that shark voted for Kerry.

Growing up on the eastern seaboard, I remember seeing a 2100lb+ Great White get caught off Montauk on the news. The liver alone was over 600lbs. There is a mounted Great White out there at nearly 3000lbs. The record for largest caught was out there too at 4200lbs, roughly the weight of your average SUV.

I have friends that do offshore paddling on what are essentially long surfboards, they say sharks check them out all the time but don't bother. It is not until they run out of food and are desperate that they turn to man eaters.

When I saw a shark get airborne on 'shark week' I resolved never to set to sea on anything not on par with the Nimitz class.

sharks have been here longer then humans have as you know. It was humans that decided we wanted to surf. It was humans that decided we wanted to swim like fish. It was humans that decided to go into the water and swim with bigger animals. Now some of you guys are all upset because you can't go swimming in the water because of somthing that was here before we were. In my eyes, you're invading it's territry. You are now in it's back yard. And if he doesn't want you there..well your finished. I anything we should be giving these sharks the respect they derserve. We are not at the top of the food chain people. We are at the top only because we have weapons to use. Take away our weapons and we are close to the bottom.

Slugs have been around longer than humans, as well. Does that mean that we can't use "Corys Slug and Snail Death" in our gardens any more?

Strange argument. I guess humans have no right going anywhere safely that we weren't evolved to go. Like airplanes. Screw security checks, it was humans who decided to fly! Let the passengers die!

The respect they deserve? They are animals who would eat you given the chance. If sharks could walk out of the ocean and kill you, they would. They are not "protecting" their back yard. They are trying to kill and eat you.

Take away a shark's teeth, tail, muscles, and brain, and it's a useless lump of flesh. Sharkes became powerful by developing their teeth as weapons, we evolved by developing the Earth's resources as weapons. No real difference, if you ask me.

Some slugs are smarter than humans ;)
Sharks kill for food, not because they are sociopaths. Humans kill for sport, for love, for oil, for religion,...BIG difference.
Take away our free will, our tools and weapons, and we're useless lumps of flesh too...Bloated bags of protoplasm, to quote Ren.
Sharks don't blow up their young, and it isn't personal. Life for them is food/not food. Honest, and they are way better at it than we are.
We screwed around with evolution, and here we are...eyeglasses for instance: in Stone ages, bad eyesight fell off cliff, was eaten, or clubbed. Now, it is passed on indiscriminately. Sharks, roaches, slugs, all get the best of us on their turf.
Big world. Leave sharks to their place in it.

Millions and millions and millions of animal species have become extinct over the past few million years. There is no great trend with humans as world dominators.

And, YES, I AM scared of a fish!!!! :D

That's a sad slaughter of a beautiful shark.

Humans' greatest problem is their massive and grotesquely oversized egos, closly shadowed by their arrogance.

Shark's are an imperative part of the ocean's eco system; keep slaughtering them, like we do everything else and see who ends up "winning."

I've been in the water with leopard sharks, makos, blue tips, sand sharks, carpet sharks, etc. and have never felt unsafe, much less attacked (can't say the same for most of the people I've met on the road, behind the wheel.)

Humans invent their little myths, purporting how special they are, to make up for our actual status; about as helpless as newborns, without all our medicine, shelter, guns, cars and money. (And equally as important, in the grand scheme.)

Anyone who fails to see the bigger picture, is blind.

    So are dragonflies...

Anyhow, when fishing off Marathon Key last year(or maybe Largo) we ran into some sharks and were allowed to reel them in and take photos but then back in the water they had to go...Could I have used the shark as a weapon against the captain to keep the shark??

BTW: Is that melting polar cap killing off the grumpy white bears?

The bigger picture, right here along the Treasure Coast, is that people are attacked every year, and when sharks are sighted, everyone is ordered out of the water.

And I alway carry a bang stick.

Anyone that believes that the Mako is anywhere near endangered needs his head examined.
They went fishing. They caught a fish.
