I guess I should get used to repeating myself. No, it's about the entire experience, the feedback the car gives you, the confidence it inspires, etc. Go out and drive a GT3 and a 360 back to back on the same twisty roads and I don't think we'll have to continue the conversation. Same is true for a Corvette vs a GT3, or an Evo vs a Corvette (although that may be closer). Well, I'm speculating, too, and as you can well imagine, it'll be a long wait to my Enzo arriving, but I would put money on my statements. Gary
That's all well & good, but my panties get in a twist when people bring marque comparisons into statments pertaining to their, subjective, assertions; i.e., the ferrari FEELS better to YOU, and you enjoy ITS feedback, allowing YOU to have more confidence in the car. Those describtors are all about you and your own car, having no basis in one brand being superior to the other, it's simply your perogative. How a thread on CGT values turned into a discussion (again) of ferrari v. porsche, is a portent example of what gets me aggitated. Sounds good. Loser buys lunch at French Laundry.
i dont get it, Zo6's and Viper's humilate porsche's all day long for half the price and here u have some porsche fanatics claiming their cars are well priced compared to a ferrari, if anything, Pcars are overpriced as well. as much as a pcar can perform parallel to an fcar, it will never be n i nthe same league, stop comparing them.
I've had way too many Porsche friends buy 360s or Stradales after a ride in one to think I'm living in my own little dream world. Have you done the back to back test? I'd love to know what you think of the 360 compared to the GT3 on sports car roads. And you've got to break the panty habit! BTW, the post that got OT and started this part of the thread was 911Fan saying Porsche's engineering was far superior to Ferrari, that's a hard one for any Ferrari owner to pass up without a response. Gary
Money talks: 1988 Ferrari 328 Cost new £33k value today £35k 1988 Porsche 911 cost new £37k value today £10-12k They make 'em better for the UK, don't know about the US.
Put a stamp in the glove box of your Ferrari or Porsche and they will both appreciate with time..........
F328nvl I was going to say the figures you quoted dont mean **** until you qualify them with a reasonable hypothesis. And provide arguments against the plausible alternatives. It was a farcical example of where the logic I perceived you were trying to purvey leads. But now, I think I'll go with ****son
Money talks eh? Then how the hell does the 1988 Porsche 911 cost £4,000 MORE than the Ferrari? Meanwhile some Porsches, like the first generation of the Turbos, have virtually ignored depreciation and cost the same now as they did new, maybe even a bit more.
Good point...some of my friends in Europe think a lot of the Corvette and Viper. Imports are many times thought of in a better light...going either direction. There is no reason to spend over $100k for a car from a performance standpoint. I have two f-cars but Germans do it better from the standpoint of engineering and durability...and a glove box and cup holder...nothing wrong with that
The economist in me will reply: The question is about the value of Porsche vs Ferrari, in an holistic, subjective, "which stirs me more" sense of value. The hypothesis, that I am responding to is that Porsche is "better" than Ferrari (or vice versa, doesn't matter) and therefore I don't need an Hypothesis. The long term evidence of like for like comparisons of the change in monetary value (an objective measure that distills the preferences of the many) of cars pitched at similar customer over 15 years adds to the weight of the argument that it's wrong to say that Porsches are more valuable. There are clearly counter arguments, (greater supply of Porsches being the obvious one) but you haven't put any forward on this occassion. Since you haven't filled out any of your profile I have no idea with whom I'm arguing - You may be a teenager or a Harvard econmics professor. In either case, it does mean s**t!
Fine I'll put up the *correct* numbers, all in US dollars. 1988 Porsche 911 Turbo MSRP 69k 1988 Ferrari 328 GTS MSRP 77k Market price for a 1988 911 Turbo according to Autotrader is about 40k. Market Price for a 1988 328 GTS is about 40k-56k acording to these guys The depreciation between them is actually rather similar based off MSRP. However, and I can't verify this via a source, I've heard on here a few times that 328s were selling for much more than MSRP and that their real depreciation is probably much more than 77k to 40k indicates. Besides which I don't have any idea why you think your argument has any weight when you are trying to claim a bone stock standard 911 cost MORE money new in 1988 than a 328 cost new in 1988!
I think perhaps the economist in you should have read the thread first. It was originally about the CGT. Then it was taken of course, to become an argument about the engineering prowess of the two companies. The question was never as now suggested by you. And its interesting you now question my post when it is in the same vein as your original post. To elaborate. The stamp detailed in my previous post is inferior to many of its siblings. But due to rarity is valued at over $1m dollars. Therefore, I was putting forward the counter argument that you have neglected to take account of supply. However, I preferred ****tsons explanation in the end  And if I listed myself as an Oxford Economics Professor would it make my arguments any more or less relevant? This is an internet forum, I suggest you judge people on the basis of their posts.
I replied to a specific post - look back and you'll see it's quoted in my original comment. Most people in here have politely said that they prefer to know with whom they are chatting without causing any offence.
I read the post you quoted with your comment. I couldn't really see how you got to this from it Although I guessed perhaps the residual values you quoted were to show that the Ferrari out "performed" the Porsche in resale. But then the stamp out performed both. I could have posted residuals of other relatively POS cars but thought the stamp was funnier.
