I am usually the one losing money out of my pockets as I keep my cash loose and I'll pull it out the wind will catch it or it will drop and I will not see it, I can't say how much I've lost but its probably alot.

In some countries in Europe, all cost are rounded up or down to the closest 5c. Nobody likes to use the silly 1c and 2c Euro coins. It comes out as a wash, and especially stores have a much easier time.

Jeff, can you tell me exactly where you live, where you shop and the most frequent places in which you pull stuff out of your pockets...? :)

Steve, you must be a Scot!

I pick up everything - who cares if it's heads up - I get my good Karma elsewhere.

When you've had young kids spreading Lego underfoot, your eyes are on the ground by habit anyway.

Penny saved is a penny earned.

OK. I just asked my wife.

She picks up all pennies...."for luck".

I asked her "what about the heads-up thing?".

Shaking head :"Nah, they're ALL lucky."

    Me: "What about nickels?"

She, eyes go big like a kid on Christmas:" Well YEAH!".

Gotta love a woman like that....

I agree with her.........anything of value on the ground is lucky!

OTOH, my guys scramble for the scrap copper, but after stripping out a couple of tons of wire in my younger days......I'll leave that stuff lying there and step right over!

My brother collects those. Depends on the year and how badly struck. Look up "penny double strike" on eBay to get an idea.

I had a bucket of change that I took in to swap. (Yeah, CoinStar gouges you at 9%, but what are you going to do?) Anyhoo, after all was said and done, the total was over $550, with about 9000 pennies in there. They do add up.

I wonder if the CoinStar machines know the difference between a Canadian penny and an American one... I've got a whole case full of Canadian pennies!

I thought the same thing when I took my stadium-sized-cup of change to a coinstar, but it was worth the 9% to not have to roll the coins like my bank requires.

Yes they do. A family member is an executive at Coinstar, and I got the whole tour a few years back in their Bellevue office and in their warehouse in renton. I asked all the stupid questions. The funniest part if you hang around their call center, and listen to some of the calls they get. The call center chicks are cute..nice boobs.

I would think that Canadian's would be flocking over the border with their coins. With the exchange rate, thats a great deal!

There is a charity organization in town that takes pennys to help people get a leader dog...I save all mine and do pick them up...Every year I drop them off...Other people do it and they have these huge canisters full of them..They add up and have been able to help a few people get the dogs.
Worth me picking one up that I can see to help someone who can't see

"If I see a penny on the ground, I pick it up. That's just how I am" - Donald Trump

I figure Trump may know a thing or two about money.

Sorting through a box of misc. items that were given to me, deciding which was trash and which was somewhat useful, there were a few pennies at the bottom along with another coin...... a pure silver 1920 George 5 Sixpense. Quite a find for the day.

Our dollar is now worth 85c to the American dollar. Not that "great a deal". In fact it would be much better for us to swap with the Brits, yeah I'm a business man!!! Yah me!

If i picked up a penny once every second I'd make a lousy 36 bucks an hour not counting the time required to count and roll and then exchange them....not worth the muscle strain. Picking up a nickel a second is a little better at 180 bucks an hour but still not overly enticing.

It's Dimes and quarters for me.

That being said, I do save the pennies I receive in change. I put them in big wine jugs and one of these days, I'm gonna melt them little pre-1986 f**kers down with an acetylene torch and make a big molten glob of copper. When It cools and solidifies, I'll stick the thing in my yard for what ever reason I cannot comprehend except that it seems like it'd be a fun thing to do.

The post '86 zinc pennies will be melted down, and then applied to various worthy body parts of my 308, or perhaps a rustable 911SC.

How many pennies required to galvanize a set of 308 body panels? How 'bout the chassis :D

*Lousy 36 bucks TAX FREE. Fed 36% (or is it still 39%?), state 7.25%, FICA, Medicare etc=50%

Therefore "A penny saved is 2 pennies earned"

    Just my 2 cents.
