Try www.digitallyimported.com Listen to various streams of classical, jazz, or dance. Go out and buy the CD's of songs you like, they tell what each artist and song is playing.

I was gonna mention these, but I was afraid he might already have them in his collection.

If I were stranded on a desert Island with a cd player and two cd's, it would be these. And don't try to convice me otherwise. :)

I just discovered a new group called, "TheSound". They have an album called "24". As far as I can tell, they haven't broken out yet and are still playing the clubs and universities around the UK.

I actually thought their music sounded a bit like U2, but a friend of mine thought it sounded sort of Tom Pettyish.

Anyone heard of them besides me? Any of you UK guys out there?

A couple of people with a decent taste for music here :)

Instead of making any suggestions I recommend to use Amazon or a similar on-line-shop: I sometimes found it interesting to look up an album I really like and then to follow the suggestions from the "Other buyers also liked ..." section. Sometimes I ended up with bands I didn´t know before. The preview feature is useful to decide whether you would like to listen to it in full at a record store or whether to buy the album in question immediatly.

Of course you will always end up with the well-known acts only. I rather prefer to listen to new bands in small clubs and if I like their music most of them offer CDs they produced from their savings. Unfortunately I have found time to go to a club concert only three times in 2004 :(

Well, as a starting point I would recommend Tool, Unloco, 40 Below Summer, Stereomud and some of the other bands already mentioned ...

Music? Did someone say music :)

Have been holding off on doing this and hope Rob does not mind me mentioning... i am editor of Enjoy the Music.com and we have hundreds (over a thousand?) music reviews at http://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/archives/music.htm . Simply pick the genre you enjoy and find the reviews accordingly :)

As for me personally... Everything from King Crimson to Bach, to Beck, to Zepplin, to Zappa, to Prodigy to Kraftwerk.

Wanna know a super secret? One of the best bands no one seems to really know of is Happy The Man. Finding their albums on vinyl is not too difficult, yet on CD they are rare and hard to find at times :( They are basically an avant garde rock/progressive type band like King Crimson during their middle years. As always...

    One more,

I have a close friend living in Belgiium who enjoys listening to a group called "Simply Autumn". They are completely unknown here in the US, but could be worth a listen to if you are interested in some new music. Kind of progressive rock, multi instruments, multi layers of sound. If you remember the 70's group called Renaissance, Simply Autumn reminds me of them.
