I may be wrong but I don't think this stuff is taught in schools over here. It certainly wasn't when I was in skool.

    Genocide.
What is distressing, as years have gone by, leaders of many countries who actually have been taught still turn a blind eye and tolerate this, the ultimate human evil.
Khmer Rouge, Serbs, B-H & Albanians, Tribal factions in Africa...
    It goes on every day.

This will end up as a quote in Lee's signature soon (also from Carlin).

Think how stupid the average American is, and then realize that half of them are dumber than that.

My mother's parents met in a political prisoner labor camp, the less lethal side of the fence, but even that sounds offensive to me, and my mom was born in a "displaced person's camp" right after the war.

Before everyone gets on the high horse and says "we'll never let that happen again", it is happening right now in Darfur.

That I believe the average American isn't stupid, but rather they just don't care to know. I'm the type of person who likes trivial facts, or useless information that isn't relavent to anything else, and only benefits myself by knowing. i.e. the typical Jeopardy contestant :D I've told others about these excting tidbits of information, and the consistant reply is "Why did you tell me that for? I don't care."

It's not ignorance that's bliss, but alternatively that I believe it's apathy is bliss.

My bet is the question was somewhat rigged. I doubt it was a simple "what is Auschwitz." May have been more like "What Nazi controlled camp in Poland did X, X and X"

I probably would of answered that question "I don't know, Auschwitz? Not sure." I thought Auschwitz was in Germany, Yahoo there says it was in Poland. So hey, if they framed the question properly to get the % they wanted...

I've heard that many Britons don't know who Jesus Christ is. Less than 50% believe in God. I've also read that - for most Britons - football (soccer) is the most important thing in life, more important than family, friends, money, their careers, religion, and God.

Those Britons who haven't heard of Auschwitz probably know what the Holocaust is. It's akin to asking someone if they know who Hitler is and then asking them where he was born. Chances are they don't know the latter.

Wow I missed slot since I have been gone. But this is an excellent synopisis of what I meant. I must have hit a tender bone. Hey, Murcielago. You will notice I did not say the average American is stupid, that would kind of imply elitism. The average American is just ignorant to the world that goes on around them because it's easy to live in America. There's no real struggle to survive. You don't have to know much. So the average Joe knows very little beyond what TV tells them. And it is sad. They know who Brittany is dating though. You know, the imporatant stuff.
I walked out into my office following this thread and asked about 10 people what Auschwitz was and I was right. Very few people could give me a simple description of it. I was really stunned and saddened. There are just certain things everyone should know and I think that is one of them. Along with Hitler, Hiroshima, Nagasaki etc...
