The media have made Ferrari a household name worldwide, but does Ferrari do any traditional (print, television, radio) advertising?

The answer is quite simply: No. Unless of course you count their F1 activities as advertising.....
Advertising in papers, magazines etc is always done by local dealers.

Yes and no. If you count coop advertising with FNA, then the answer is likely "yes". If you're thinking about something from SpA, the answer is likely no.

There used to be weekly ads in the Wall Street Journal and NY Times Sunday Edition from local dealerships -- usually in the front section of the WSJ or in the business section of the NYT.

Ferrari used to have print ads in the early 80s for the 308 series....I saw them in very upscale magazines, similar to Robb Report. I can't recall the title, but they were one-page color ads. Clippings make their way on ebay from time to time.

You could say Ferrari advertises by unveiling new models at Car Shows (Geneva), and then lets the automotive press test demo models (CAR, Road and Track, Car and Driver, Automobile, etc.). What with the press harping on every new model that comes out, Ferrari doesn't really need to advertise at all - they get it for free, and from a somewhat objective and technical source.

They are running Maserati print ads, but they really need to redouble their efforts and get TV ads and product placements going. The public doesn't know you can even buy Maseratis anymore.

Years ago I saw a very subtle full-page Ferrari ad in a magazine, maybe Fortune, Forbes or maybe it was Departures, Amex's mag. Other than that, nothing.
    They have no need.

I think the advertising is left to the dealers. They'll put up their own in local dailies or more often in car mags like Forza.

I remember seeing a very elegant looking ad featuring the 328 in a copy of Architectural Digest from the late 80's. Under the photo was the Ferrari branding of the time: We are the competition.

In the 80's, they had advertisements on the back covers of Motor Trend, Car and Driver, etc.

Black and white, with "Ferrari, We Are The Competition." If you pick up an older magazine devoted to Ferrari on Ebay, you may find one of the ads on the back.

As mentioned, their advertising today is Maserati, F1, Shell, merchandising, unveiling cars, special appearances, 50th Anniversary promotions, some product placement (Charlies Angels), and the individual dealers' ads.

So they may not advertise in print or TV, but they keep visible. When you sell everything you make (Ferrari, not neccessarily Maserati), you don't go after the untapped demographics in print and TV. Customers come to you.

I also remember seeing print ads with a line similar to "What can be conceived can be created."

I remember in the 80's they did. Magazines like Architectual Digest always had ads for ferrari. Most of them were 328s but when F1 got big and the 355 took it to an all new level, adverts were not needed.
