Fantastic discounts on IBM computers for my friends at F-Chat

When we say that we are getting out of the PC biz, it means that we will be selling our remaining production facilities. IBM has not decided if they will continue to sell branded PC that are built to our spec to our comercial customers. The sale may or may not include the LapTop group. Current customers will get the same top quality support as always.

My understanding is that IBM does not own any of its own production facilities, as all PC mfg. has been outsourced to other companies. Several years ago, IBM quit manufacturing their own machines. Lenovo group would be buying the PC development company and about 2,500 employees, including the rights to use the ThinkPad and IBM name for a certain period of time. Latest news is that all PCs will be going (including ThinkPad), but through a minority stake in the new group, IBM would continue to provide service on these machines, both those previously sold under IBM and, at least for a period of time, all new machines sold. Today's WSJ has a good summary.

 

I would like to thank Adam for his generous offer. I just received my IBM T42 Thinkpad. Within 5 minutes of getting the computer I was up and running on the Internet.

I cannot believe how will built the T42 is. This thing is really built like a tank. It weighs half of my old Dell Inspiron 8100, and is ten times the quality. Thanks again Adam.

Not quite the case....IBM sold all of it's US production facilities a bit back, but still has a facility (the one up for sale) in China.

Damn, that's cheap. The price difference alone pays for a RT ticket from HK. Does the warranty cover outside US?

 

This IBM plan can only ship to the US.

I understand that. I have relatives in the states who can take the shipment for me if I order. I am just saying that it's cheap enough to justify my flying to the states to pick them up. I wonder if the warranty on these notebooks is only good for US. Many notebooks nowadays carry international warranty.

 

I doubt there is a limit on the number of people. After all, how can IBM limit the number of friends Adam can have? Almost all member of F-chat are friends with each other to some degree. So, that equates to thousands of friends for Adam!
