Are we moving towards socialism, and a two class society ? It is no longer how many cases you can purchase. It is no longer; if you can place the order of 200 cases or more. Buying power is no longer competitive, when you talk in case quantity. It is now discussed in terms of, how many 40 foot containers you can import from China. It has been brought up before on F.C.

Our government has looked lately into prescription medications, national health insurance, and child daycare for everyone etc.... Perhaps they might think instead, about looking into helping industry develop new, and hi tech competitive products ?

It is alarming when a 5 year old asks why "everything" is made in China. I did not mention the trade situation with China to my 5 year old.

The falling $ may bring some industrial jobs back to the US although Ferraris will be a lot more expensive

I was speaking to an exec at a large Co who was beside himself at the fact that the Chinese could manufacture a product & have it for sale in the US for cheaper than the US Co could buy the raw materials

The chinese have created a scarcity on international markets of aluminum, copper, steel, and other raw materials

Also their human rights record of using slaves & prison labor is not very good.

If I see 2 products & 1 is made in China & the other is not I buy the non China product

IMO China is alot like Japan in the late 60s, stuff made in Japan was a joke it was so cheap and made of the lowest quality tin pot metal, then they improved and actually surpassed the US quality stuff starting with TV sets which put companies like Curtis Mathis who was best quality US TV maker and many others out of business, then stereos, cars, motorcycles, etc..

China is following the same pattern and quality will improve and end product costs, their have been some new Countrys on the map lately with even cheaper slave child labor and total lack of enviormental laws to exploit that will take over Chinas lead soon.

Big Macs are more than .99 cents outside the U.S. !!!!

We could make a ton selling grey market Big Macs in targeted markets.

With the exception of fortune cookies I cannot think of anything MFG’d here in USA anymore!

And its not like I’m helping. Virtually everything I source is offshore too!

We just need to face the fact that the good old USA is just that…OLD!!

Blame it on all those old school corporate junkies who at the height of their reign blew their profits refusing to re-investing in better technologies to streemline their processes and compete with future oversees competition.

Blame it on greedy unions who insist on fattening up their coffers by draining any excess capital from the employer in a twisted game of extortion.

He11 lets face it! It’s a global…YES G.L.O.B.A.L. Economy! That means we are now competing with a world of better educated and highly motivated workers! Who are kicking our A$$.

Good Luck everyone…See ya in the soup line!

As I recall Japan started playing dirty pool in the 70s with everything, such as flooding the Tv market with units at or below cost to kill off the US competition and it worked. You could buy a $700 us made Zenith or Cutris Mathis set or a $69 Japanese set that did everything but look as nice with wood cabnetry. The same with other products, they were happy to make pennies instead of $50s which the American mfrs made, and the US makers wrongly assumed consumers would be brand and US loyal for a product that didn't work as well and was more expensive.

The US is only leading in high technology today, sophisticated electronics, computers, software, biotech, aircraft, and advanced metal technology, all the low tech junk is made overseas today.

A recent cover story in BusinessWeek was titled "The China Price". It is very well-written.

The biggest issue is the consumers that want cheap stuff. When there is demand, somebody's got to supply it.

Yes the Japanese were not exactly capitalists when they first arrived in the US. They were actually Mercantalists meaning that they were willing to lose $ in order to flood the market & steal market share, which they did.

Chinese products are already much higher quality than earlier. The only country I can see beating China in cheap labor is India with a pop just over 1B I cant see how any other country can compete against these 2 in terms of mass # of people to build cheap stuff for almost no $

The Chinese economy is growing & they now have a viable consumer market of their own.Hopefully this will force their leaders to improve human rights of their low end workers.

I would gladly pay more $ for a product if I knew its builders were treated humanely

    I disagree.

There is tons of extremely high tech stuff made in China. All sorts of computer hardware, medical hardware, chips, machine equipment, robotics, wireless technology.... China has a big footprint in all the cutting edge high tech areas.

They may not develop as much of the cutting edge technologies, but when it comes time to bring them to market you better bet on China. They do it faster, cheaper and better. Chinese companies dont have to fret environmental impact studies and laws, labor laws, patent or copywrite issues... any of the stuff that US companies must deal with. They also of coarse have a massive pool of skilled but dirt cheap labor. Is it any surprise that they have an insurmountable pricing advantage over US companies?

Dont look to the US Govt. to do anything about it either because they cannot. China has covered that base as well.... they own about 10% of the overall US Treasury debt. If they dumped, the US Govt. is bankrupt. We will play ball to rules they agree with because they OWN the ball.

I have thought a good deal about the hypothetical of placing different types of import tarrifs on Chinese goods. Would the increased Govt. revenues offset budget deficits enough to lessen the risk of Chinese dumping of Treasury bonds? Would increased consumer prices lead to inflation that would raise rates and thus increase deficits putting us further into dependancy to the Chinese? How would the Chinese respond? Taiwan would clearly begin to play into the action. Is risking a hot war worth pushing a trade war?

The US is now a service industry driven economy anyhow. High Tech can still be a big part of the US future, but only the development of new high tech channels and products. When its time to take them to market, China will be the one doing it. Services, real estate, entertainment, investments and banking... all these things the Chinese will have a tough time controlling. Manufacturing? Its gone and will never come back.

The answer is to eliminate government from trade entirely. Eliminate the income tax...see www.fairtax.org
...divorce government from money(eliminate the Federal Reserve system) renounce the Bretton Woods Accords and return to the gold standard...radical surgery? You betcha, but necessary if true prosperity is what we seek. In a truely free market, it does not matter where a product is produced.

Oxymoron?? Socialism means redistribution of wealth to form a one-class society.

Yes, we are moving towards a two class society and in the opposite direction of socialism. Government programs and entitlements have received huge cuts over the last 20 years, and the progressive income tax has been made gradually less and less progressive. Every year in the last 20 years, the top 10% has gained a larger percentage of the total wealth than the year before and there is no reason to think that this trend will not continue for many years to come.

As most of you on this board are part of this top 10%, you should be very satisfied with this trend.

John Kennedy issued executive orders during his presidency which made the Federal Reserve basically useless. His executive orders gave the treasury the right to issue their own currency and they began to issue "Treasury Notes" which were backed by silver. He figured eventually people would desire the Treasury Notes more since they were backed by silver, and would no longer want the Federal Reserve notes. When LBJ became president, he stopped the treasury from issuing this currency, but no president has ever repealed Kennedy's executive orders. They just prefer to pay interest to the private banks which make up the Federal Reserve for money they borrow rather than issue their own interest-free treasury notes. Kind of like Corporate Welfare for the big banks at the expense of taxpayers.

Because we like quantity over quality. And if we had all that stuff made here, the social cost of all those low wage earners would break the bank!

And it STILL would not be so cheap!

As for the Japanese, they worked very hard for many years, and still work hard to prop up our standard of living. And what do they get for their controlled economy?? A dozen years of recession and a standard of living much lower than ours.

Lessons to be learned by the Chinese as they could head down the same mercantilist path. They should use the money they earn to help raise the standard of living for the Masses (to borrow from Mao) and not prop up an economy based solely on exports and doing silly things like buying Rockefeller Center..
