Thanks Hubert. I guess all schools have their little clicques. I just meant at New Haven, I would be really out of place with all the blue blood, rich white suburban kids. Was curious how that compared to Cornell. Though Cornell seems to be much more diverse.

Then again, since I wouldn't be doing undergrad, friends are not the most important thing. For grad school I promised myself I would go to a school where I like the geography and it is liveable, something I didn't do for undergrad, where I only chose based on academic quality.

    Schultzois,

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. Iw ouldn't be living in New Haven. Few fellow F chatters recommended against it. I would get a condo about 30 minutes outside and commute. I really didnt' want to do that, but have been advised that is the best situation for me.

No problem! Hope it ends up being helpful.
I am curious where you'd choose 30 minutes outside New Haven. On one hand, a good choice could put you less than an hour from NYC (!) but on the other hand I know traffic around New Haven can be quite bad so I guess I'd say be careful not to pick somewhere that is going to make your daily in-n-out to New Haven worse than you bargained for. I know every time I've passed through or around New Haven it's been an annoying slowdown. Wouldn't want to deal with that everday.

Have you considered a nice home on the north shore of Long Island with a fast boat to take you across to New Haven? Just kidding. No, seriously. I remember entertaining thoughts like this when I lived in the bay area and traffic was getting bad around '99-'00.

I was picturing one of those old wooden cigar boats, which I think are pretty fast, but I don't know how they handle over a distance and I guess things can also get a little choppy out there.

One of the reasons I never did this in SF is I was never sure what kind of boat you'd need, how long it would take, how often conditions would foul you up, and whether a few weeks of bouncing around to and fro every day would have me swearing off the water for good. :)

yes you have been helpful, as have other EC peeps. I really appreicate it. :)
I am not sure exactly what towns I am considering yet, since I haven't decided between Ithaca or New Haven. Hutch91TR ( F chatter) said he would help me with a few decisions. :)

I agree that I want a commmute that is not too harsh. I preferred to live clos e by, but have been told, buying something in the area would not be adviseable.

Are you joking or serious about Long Island?

I really don't know... lots of things I start out joking about become serious. And even more things I start out serious about become a joke.

I doubt this one would really work, but with a fast enough boat, the right places to dock, and a few EC guys to help you work through the snags, who knows? :D

Ah I see you were joking. Thats ok I don't want to live in LI that much. Have a friend who lives there. Typical suburban house. Full glas inside (a Jewish doctor owned it prior). I was there for thanksgiving. In the morning went for a walk, even though it was an upper class neighborhood, I didn't like the feel of it.

Wait a minute, I didn't say that. I hear the Long Island guys coming after me now...

    Better than Jersey at least!

Phew. Now they can just fight it out with each other like they usually do. ;)
