Here is my '77 Euro 308. I want to start looking for a 348 as an upgrade (yes, I will miss the sleek 308 lines and Melodie will kill me if I have two Ferrari's in the garage). I am asking $35K. From a few people I have spoken with about the price, most think it's fair, few think it's $5K over valued at $35K and a few think I should ask more because it has such a low, early VIN (23003).

The car has 70K US miles on the OD. The body is near perfect. Being a Euro, it has zero smog items and no CATS. The engine is 3K miles off a fresh 30K and the gearbox has just been rebuilt. I had the seats and door panels redone with a VERY nice soft leather (Black with red piping) and new carpets.
This month, I will get new tires and replace all of the suspension rubber.

Please comment on your thoughts regarding my asking price and what the maximum price could be for this car to the right buyer that wants a very low VIN 308.

I'd stand firm for awhile........that's in line with the tire kicking I've done..

I will note that the market seems sluggish right now.........

    Do you have stock wheels????

Can you post some more picks?

I voted 35k because of the items you noted. But, with your recent, public posts about having it fixed, that might work against you.

    A '77 308GTS??

I guess Europe got them first, conventional wisdom, whoever he is, says all were GTBs until '78 in the US.........

This is a VERY early GTS, is it dry sump as well? That'd be a big selling point, IMO!!!

The major helps significantly. The mileage is going to be a deal killer. I have trouble getting people to look at my 328 with 75,000 miles. The No Cat thing may help in some places, but for those of us who have tailpipe emission checks, the emission stations aren't going to care that it's a Euro.

If you don't have to sell it, hold the line. The price seems fair but you're going to need a special buyer to step up to a "high-mileage" car. (215 miles a month -- that's just abuse ;) )

None of the recent posts should work against me. If anything, it's a plus due to mechanic I met that actually put the car back together after my 14 months of hell (Note that the hard parts on this car are stamped with 666 from the factory!). He did an awesome job.

35k seems right given the recent service and gearbox work plus the refreshed interior. With new rubber and suspension bushings this makes the car at 35k for sure as the 'usual suspects' and normal wear/replace items have been dealt with. Sure there are lower priced Fcars out there, but (rhetorical question) what will they need in service/funds to reach the level of your car?

Perhaps you might go down to 34k, but 33k would be a bit low in my book. Sales are usually slow in the winter, yet in the spring things heat up quite a bit :)

Only other main concerns is the exhaust system, engine mounts, condition of the shocks, and of course rust factor.

If the car checks out great for compression/leakdown then you should be fine at 35k or so. But there will always be someone looking to lowball you 30k hoping to get a steal. Stand firm. Sure they can get a 30k car... and the needs for future servicing/costs that usually come with that.

    Just my 2 Yen.

Power to you! If you get that kind of money, all of us 308 owners would be happy to see that the prices are going up. I watch eBay and I just don't see these cars getting this kind of money yet, but I'm sure they will in a few more years. I have a '77 too. I'd probably see how it goes for a while, but be realistic in taking offers on it below your asking price.

    Best of luck!

Peter, just curious, do you have the DOT exemptions? i.e., does it need to be smogged in California?

Other than that, it looks beautiful, and I hope it is worth at least $35k.

The headers are like new, painted and wraped with high-temp glass. I did cut the resonator off, and it sounds great! I do have the resonator saved. Also, the AC compressor was not put in the car, but I have all of the parts. Since 308 AC units suck in general, having it out save a few hours during a service and the car it a bit lighter.

The car is smogged, but I do not have a DOT exemption. It's only two years away from being exempt from smog (As long as the government does not screw with the rules).

As I recall in 1977 US spec 308s came with a thermreactor system, not a cat.

    A comment about the poll:

The only people who really matter are the ones writing checks. I asked on an Esprit list what people thought my S4s was worth. There was quite a distance between what non-buyers or other owners told me my car was worth and what actual shoppers would be willing to pay. I found my mechanic to be a more accurate source. He's seen the cars trade hands recently and knows the market price.

    Peter,

I have no doubts that your car is very nice, but IMO (which is worth less than you paid for it), it's a $30k car. If I were a buyer, it being a Euro would concern me, as would the high miles. And what's with those gold wheels, didn't you ever sell those? ;) I see plenty of QV 308's and 328's in that price range with fewer miles and equal maintenance. That isn't to say that there isn't a buyer for your car somewhere, but I think it will take quite a bit longer to sell at $35k.

FWIW, if I was to put my 49k mile 328 on the market today, I'd probably ask $40k.

The mindset of anybody buying a Ferrari should be to have an extra $5K set aside for maintenance. That would not be a concern for this particular car (IMO).

I believe they just did screw with the rules...

I don't have the facts at my finger tips but...I think last month the state of Ca put new rules in place to take away the rolling exemption, I think now it has to be pre...1963?????

    Or something like that.

honestly i think you're way overpriced at 35k
    just imho

    i think 25k "maybe"

euro model with no smog equip (and no DOT or BAR stickers) in CA ?
who's gonna wanna touch it ?

at $35k you're talking QV money with 40k miles and a car that'll pass smog with it's eyes closed

why buy a carb car with the headaches
