I picked the GT40 because it IS a Ford. As a Ferrari owner for sometime now, it gets really old dealing with the retarded price you have to pay just because of the name. So it would be nice not to have to deal with that crap. The other thing is that there is very little in the after market world for Ferrari engines. With Ford there is loads of stuff. The GT40 also is blown so it is VERY easy to get more power out of it, if you want to, and cheaply at that. You would have to spend tens of thousands to get more power out of the 430, and then the GT40 would still have more power at a fraction of the cost. Ferrari has taken a step in the right direction with the jump in displacement, but they are still behind the ball now. Sorry but it would be the GT40 given the choice.

Then why do you guys own Ferrari's???? 308-328 Underpowered and slow. 348 Maintance hog and slow, not he best of handling either -so-so. 355 ok but still not all that fast, decent handling and ok accelleration. 360 better than 355 but marginally, better daily drive, less maintance. 430 much better machine. Stats look much better. 575-550 ....I don't have alot of experience with the v 12's but power..great..handling?? There have been many cars during the last 20 years that "smoke" the Ferrari's, so let me ask again---- why do you own a Ferrari????

Yes I do like the GT, however any car manufacturer can come up with a supercar every so often. I believe the GT will take a pounding after the vanity wears off. It is a FORD. Whether some of you agree or not, it will. Look at history. History tends to repeat its self. I do believe Ford did a good job on the GT but in 3 years I will buy one for fun for about 90-100k. Meanwhile the 430 3 years later will bring 180k while I bought it for MSRP at about 193K. The Ford GT vanity will wear off while people will still Drool over the Ferrari. When I had my 348 I also owned a 57 completely perfect 'vette. This car was abeauty and absolutely perfect. Whenever people would come over they would drool at the 348 because of its classic Ferrari look and barley mention the vette. That would kill me because there were plenty of 348's to be had but this vette had heart and soul (and tons of money) POURED in it. People still like the 348 more. Amazing. Guys I am a Ferrari fan. Always will be. I like the GT but would not take one over my "team". I don't mind the waiting or the MSRP prices, money is just a means and a way to channel fun out of life. The 430 looks tough and elegant. It has a mean stance and HP to back it up. I'M ALL IN!!! Find a nice dealer, sell them on you, kill 'em with kindness (it is all in the salesmanship) and you will get a 430 within 2 years at MSRP. Come on guys if I can, you can.

Because it's a Ferrari and most of all affordable. If I could get a GT40 for $30k I would have that. You also need to understand that there are different Fcar groups on this site and not all of us can or want to spend the big bucks for a fun car. I would say we are split into a few classes here.
    1. Buy affordable (under $40K) and fix it yourself
    2. Buy the newer cars and dealer repair
    3. Buy classics and self restore (also get restored by someone else)
So if you look at this you have people making $75K a year and living their dreams and you have people making over $200k a year living their dream.

I remember the same discussions back in 1966 when the mark 1 came out specificly to beat the Ferrari's at LeMann's and you had the rest of the world vs. the US Ford. You know the results , I think I still have the news paper and I still remember seeing it on TV. So I always wanted a Fcar and now have one. Can't take that away but if some said take your choise between an F-40 or GT40 , I'd take the Ferrari but vs. the 430 then its the GT40

I,as a Ferrari owner could give a rip about SEMA or the "aftermarket" crap. Perfectly said though, buy a GT and then go down to Autozone and pick up some aftermarket junk (loosley expressed). It's about the pride of ownership and class. I know that is an awkward word to use but it's the fact. Could you guys imagine if they had a Twin Turbo on the 430.....probably 650-790 hp. You make the statement "The GT40 also is blown so it is VERY easy to get more power out of it, if you want to, and cheaply at that." You don't think it will be expensive to get more power??? Look at the expense to get 750hp from the GT. It will be 30-40k to get it out of the 430. Run your numbers again.

    Steve,

Nicely said. I think the real value (depreciation adjusted) for the GT is around 75-95k. I truly do not believe an American muscle car is worth 150k (and no I am not communist). The Ford GT is set up for unbelievable amounts of depreciation and then they want to tack on another 30-50k hahahhahaha.

Please explain this train of thought in more detail. I don't follow. Are you saying it'll cost $30K to get 200hp out of a supercharged 5.4L engine?

You'll get the GT to 650 HP with a pulley kit for $200. Another hundred horsepower would likely cost several thousand (think upsized blower and exhaust). For 30-40K you could build that GT into a 6 second car, the engine bay is HUGE! Put a funny car motor back there and learn what "traction limited" is all about!

Why don't you take a glimpse of my post above. Sure this dealership is outrageous but most of the GT's are going for 200-225. Forget about adding horsepower for 30-75 more, heck that is just the markup.

So your point is that the car will cost more than the sticker. So wait 6 months. Where I live I couldn't drive it till then anyways. Buy it at sticker, drop a couple hundred on a pulley kit and there you have you 650hp supercar instead of a 550hp one. voila!

Yawn.. yes, and Ferraris are just Fiats.. Next !

I disagree strongly. Unless you're making a comment about your neighbourhood.

Regarding the price issue, bear in mind the entire world doesn't live in the USA, and with the current exchange rates.. the Ford GT is looking VERY affordable compared to a F430 (like 30% cheaper comparing MSRP)

It's interesting to see the split views of the Ferrari forum.. I suspect if you were to ask the same question to GT owners.. I suspect it wouldn't be as close as on here...

Yeah, I hear you. The Ferrari has that flash and mystique. I don't belittle what the little yellow horse means to the unwashed masses. But attention is just part of the equation. I had posted I'd take the Ferrari for a year, but the GT for a keeper. I stand by that, gawkers not withstanding. The difference isn't now, but down the line.

Funny story. I was parked next to a 328 in my well restored Lotus Europa TC (but it's an under $20k car) waiting for my son. I was sitting between the two cars on the curb so no one knew which was mine. Each passerby liked the Ferrari but went nuts with the Europa. One comment, "Everyone has a Ferrari; this is special". Okay, I'd take a 328 over my Europa personally! But it was interesting how my car worth a fraction of the 328 was the classic.

The newer Ferraris will always be cool cars but will pale against the lastest model except the few that will endure the test of time: the 246 has, the Daytona, 288 of course, and I predict the 308 will eventually sell for a fortune when all the poor people who can't afford to keep them up eventually destroy the cars beyond reasonable restoration. That day isn't too far off!

The Ford GT I think will attain the same status as the classic Ferraris. There will be faster cars, but that won't matter. It's a special car that I think will endure and appriciate in spite of the Ford name on the hood.

    Ken

That is one of the reasons I am looking at it. With only 3750 being made. Accidents and theft will take out 750 over some time that leaves roughly 3000. I am into anything with engines. I do believe this car can achieve more horses but I am not into aftermarket stuff. I am thiking very hard on the GT but it will need to come down in the 170-190 area. Maybe that will take a year or so. No matter what the arrival of the 430 is what I have been waiting for for a longggggggg time. It is the one time I will be able to get a new Ferrari. I never have liked the waiting game, so I never buy new. Well with the 430 I am willing to wait. For those who like the GT, god bless you. I am all for American muscle, it is a nice car up close. The classic muscle look, however my heart longs for the 430. To each his own. Good luck if anybody here gets one (Foed GT), let me know how it runs.

To answer your question "Why are you a Ferrari owner?", well because I wanted one as a kid. What you don't know before you get one, is all the crap you have to put up with as an owner. Now I'm not saying that I would give up my Ferrari for a Ford, I would just add the Ford to my garage.

The question about making more power cheaper, yes you can. There is a shop close to were I live the specializes in modified Mustags. One of the customers had a moded '04 Cobra that was making about 520 hp and 495 lb/ft of torque. I asked how much he spent to get that power out of the engine. If I remember correct it was around $3,000. It was simple stuff too. The stock blower was replaced with a stock blower that was ported, the pully was changed to a smaller one, a larger throttle body was put on it, freeflow exhaust, a crossover or x-pipe as some call it, and a couple of other small things that were cheap to do. The guy was very nice and we exchanged rides. I was really impressed by how quick and fast his Cobra was. That car could really MOVE!!!! Now if $3,000 can take a 380 hp engine to 520hp, imagine what doing the same to an engine that already makes 550hp, can do. For sure you will be deep in the 600hp range, and more than likely in the 700's.

In defence of the 430, it is a HUGE step in the right direction. First and formost they got rid of the stupid timing belt. This should have been done years ago. The next thing is the big jump in displacement. That also was needed years ago. Compairing it to a 360, the 430 is hands down the winner just because it has NO TIMING BELT, and has a bigger motor.

But that isn't what we are compairing it to. For the cost the GT40 is just a better choice.

In my opinion the real test will be on the track. That is were the final say so will be. Will it be the 430, or will it be the GT40. Based on Ferrari's recent track history it looks like the Gt40 is the favorite. But only time will tell.

When I first saw the poll, I thought it was a bit of a joke, but was subsequently astounded to see it was even this close. But then, thinking about it, there are many people enamoured of the GT40, former glory and all that. Nothing wrong with that.

But I would definitely go for the F430. My reasons :

    1) It's a Ferrari

    2) IT'S A FERRARI !! :D

    3) Choice of getting an F1 transmission - The word is that the problems have more or less been sorted out by now, and I want to try something new from the stickshift.

    4) Launch control

    5) Selectable traction control modes - Sports, Race, Off.

(I don't know if the latter electronic gizmos are present in the Ford, but I'm assuming they aren't).

    6) Reportedly terrible fuel economy of the Ford. Apart from financial issues think of the inconvenience of filling up every two days with the Ford.I know the Ferrari won't exactly be a Toyota Prius economy wise, but I'm sure it'll be better than the Ford.

For the price of the Ferrari, I'm getting a beautiful Italian thoroughbred that can function as a daily driver and instant track (circuit) car. That's all I want of my rides. ;)

I read once that the Ford GT was going to come out for $150,000 when it hit production. One editor of this magazine said

"I cannot imagine that if you took all of the pieces of the GT and laid them out, they could not equal anything near $150,000."

Are you guys crazy? This guy was criticizing the $150,000 price tag, while you're all glorifying the 230k-300k! That's up to 100% markup! Aren't you supposed to buy a Ford for the great rebates?

The Ford's powerplant is generic as well as blown. The F430 is an engineering masterpeice, naturally aspirated and only 57 or so ponies short of the SC'd Ford GT. I'd like to see what a small blower would do to the F430, but even without, it would be my first choice.

Ford couldn't compete with the Chevrolet z28 SS, so they slapped a blower on the Cobra, and launched it directly onto the heels of the Corvette (the HEELS still) and don't even get me started on the CobraR.

Ken-- If you feel that waiting for the enemy to attack and sacrificing anywhere from a few to a few thousand innocent lives is the proper way to go about things, I feel that your morality should be taken into question. Perhaps you just don't know anyone that's personally been affected by such things. I just feel that if we have the information, and it has been confirmed, there is no reason to just stand by idly and watch it happen.
