thanks guys for the high reving info. I think it was the mat. does anyone know of a mensa chapter that I could join? Idiot. Now I have another problem. I was going to stretch my 308's legs and I stopped to get something for the girlfriend. I went into the store and came out about 5 min later. She wouldn't start. It will start with one grrr then I can here the strarter but it never turns over to start. I sat in that parking lot for a while and still couldn't get it to start. After waiting a couple of minutes it would give me the intial grr but it wouldn't catch. She's still there now. any suggestions? I sure as hell don't want to leave it in that parking lot all night.

    thanks,

    matt white

Can you try to push start it? Does anyone know is push starting a ferrari is Ill-advised?
Do you think your battery is dead? Wire brush the terminals, give the battery a quick charge and see if it starts.

If the starter isn't engaging, it sounds like a solenoid to me. I'm not sure if the solenoid is self contained in the starter.

So it turned over but wouldn't start?

You need to troubleshoot. First is the battery. Between the coil and starter, a weak one won't get it done. Then the electrical. Dumb question, but are the distributors tight? Mine popped loose once on my Lotus and it took me an hour to realize it wouldn't start because of timing!

Do you get spark? If you have battery, timing and spark then you're not getting fuel. Fuel pump? You're not out of gas I take it. Is it flooded from your attempts? I would think so; try gas all the way to the floor when you turn the key. Don't pump it!

Starting problems are usually simple to diagnose if not cheap to fix. A car must run with fuel, spark and timing if the starter can turn over the engine.

I'd say -dead battery, as a result of a failed alternator. The car ran on pure battery to the store, but was too drained of juice to restart the car. Put a fresh battery in - start car, and check voltage across the battery with the car running (and the alternator, hopefully, doing something). If the voltage is higher than 12V, the alternator is working. If, while the car is still running, you read 12V or LESS, the alternator is NOT working and needs a rebuild.

well, let me tell you what i found. The battery seemed fine and the engine was turning over with the same vigor as before. It had a new battery put in a month ago according to ferrari of atlanta. i then started checking plugs. when i got to the ones next to the firewall, i had no fire to any of them. I think these were replaced one month ago also. I checked and that rotor was turning. Any suggestions from that point. I now have to consult someone with more knowledge. help

Check coil/coil wire, rotor, digiplex and connections at digiplex.

I'd check the coil wire first. It's possible it's gone bad or isn't connected.

Try changing your sparkplug wires. Exactly this happened to my brothers opel. and it was the plugwires.. It had exactly the same symptomes. Give it a try m8! :)

Morrie hit on what one of my first ideas would be, right behind battery connections. The solenoid as it wears out, creates more and more resisance in the contacts, due to the surface getting slowly more pitted from arcing as they are used. Resistance creates heat, which creates resistance. A real "Circle". I found the earlier 308's and Mondy's had a Bosch starter,so a trip thru the parts catalog (Not looking in the gold edged section titled Ferarri), I found a replacement. The solenoid from a early to mid '70's VW Bus would drop right into place. The only difference is a third connection that they used for points type ignition, (ballast resistor bypass) which you just ignore. The VW secton doesn't have gold leaf on the pages, so it only cost me around $20.00 for one.
