Yes, fines are a bit crazy in Belgium...
It's better not to get caught!

Remember I got a ticket with the rented F355 Spider last summer...
Luckily NOT for speeding, although I got away with it safely a few times... Joren, Bert, remember the last fast tunnel we took in Brussels that night? That was a real close one... Luckily they couldn't register the speed or follow us... Pfeuw!

No, I got a ticket in the city of Antwerp the first night... Had to pay 50euro for honking the Ferrari-horn!!!
Ok, the amount of money wasn't a big deal, even cheaper than a fuel fill up... but still... stupid waiste of money for some jealous cops!

the schengen treaty says (reduced to one sentence), that the member states provide legal enforcement assistance to each other, but the offendant may not be punished more than when his offence would have happened in his home country. this is only valid for fines, not for prison sentences and revocals of licenses.

so it would be cool to have a list of rules and sanctions for each country.

another topic is the revocal of licenses. this is regulated in a EU treaty dated 1998, but i don't know how many countries already have ratified it. this needs further investigations.

and of course, there are still bilateral treaties between several countries.

Do you really want to know? If you think the Belgian fines are high....

    km/h - euro
    0-10 - 30
    11-15 - 45
    16-20 - 70
    21-25 - 100
    26-30 - 125
    31-35 - 205
    36-40 - 240
    41-45 - 270
    46-50 - 300
    51-55 - 365
    56-60 - 420
    61-65 - 465
    66-69 - 520
    >69 normally you will be prosecuted and the judge will decide, but I don't know what will happen to foreigners. I think the police officer will speak to the prosecutor, who will then decide what the fine is going to be. You can rest assure it's going to be quite an onslaught on your wallet!

Note that the fines around here will be higher when you speed at a section of road where there's a restriction because of roadworks.

    km/h - euro
    0-10 - 55
    11-15 - 90
    16-20 - 115
    21-25 - 145
    26-30 - 170
    31-35 - 225
    36-40 - 255
    41-45 - 280
    46-50 - 325
    51-55 - 390
    56-60 - 455
    61-65 - 520
    66-69 - 550
    > 69 same as above

When you bring your Fcar to the Netherlands, make sure you bring a lot of cash as well, because I think that's the only payment the police accept.

Thanks Eugenio, I hope so too... :)
By the time I buy a Ferrari, fines will probably be even higher than today!

Mail like that is never welcome... but I guess we'll all receive one of those every now and then... or sooner or later...

I noticed that you have to pay 55 euro for going 144 in a 120 zone... but the info in Roland's post says, a "violation" like that should cost you 100?
Or is it cheaper in this case because the car is registrated in Belgium and your handled as a "foreigner"?

Note that the same situation would have cost 175 in Belgium...

    + 6-10 km/h: 100.-
    + 11-15 km/h: 160.-
    + 16-20 km/h: 240.-
more: criminal prosecution, fine depending on income, revocal of license

    3. highways (speed limit 120 km/h or less):

    + 1-5 km/h: 20.-
    + 6-10 km/h: 60.-

for foreigners it's a high estimate if you get caught directly (guess what happens to a ferrari driver!), if it goes to court, it's the income in the tax declaration for swiss people, don't know about foreigners.
