X-mas party list

Looks like I will almost definetly not make it- it's supposed to rain and snow on Friday- and I'll be leaving Albany during rush hour- looks like another 5 hr trip home... @^(&#*)$

 

The latest weather computer model projections look to me much better for Friday. The next cold front comes through the NE earlier Friday so on a drive down from Albany to Suffern (Hilburn) (a pretty fast shot in good weather) later Friday there should be no more than a few flurries in the favored hilly spots on the way down, and the party should have good weather for all coming though cold.

It is for Monday 20th that the longer range projections from today,including both the US and European models, are starting to signal an ominous turn of events. They predict they that an intense jet stream (now still way out over the North Pacific) at high levels of the atmosphere will dive into the eastern US this weekend and form a ciculation pattern aloft that is a "necessary but not sufficient" condition for really extreme winter weather here in the NE including the potential for a blizzard followed by intense cold. Way to early to give a probability on this actually happening but with each model run (they are run at 12-hourly intervals) this week the most likely scenario will emerge with greater clarity. What seems clear to me is that today we are beginning at least a three-week period of abnormally cold and at times snowy conditions here in the east at first, then this regime backing up into the central and west. Hopefully this pattern will break with a classic January thaw by mid-January. I drove my F-car to work today and will drive it to the party for a bit more fun before the roads get salted up.
