I am a voracious reader, but just haven't seen any great ferrari magazines. I have bought forza, and cavallino, but these aren't all that great (personal opinion). They are nice if you want to know the selling price of a classic car, or to read ads for cigars and fine watches. But just not a lot of meat...

With the porsche mags there were tons of technical articles, upgrades, car evals, running evals, interview with tuners/repair shops, articles on parts cost/reliability, shootouts, etc. Kept me busy for hours... With the ferrari mags, I can skim through it in 5 minutes, and then I am pretty much done. I then have a 10$ coffee table magazine. I know I should be grateful for the material available, because the publishers cater to a very small group - but are the magazines currently the way folks want them? Most of the pics show owners that must be in their 80's, walking around and polishing their cars...

Does a different/better magazine exist in the ferrari world? If it weren't for ferrarichat I think I would shoot myself...

Why aren't their any meaty magazines? Why don't the current two have more substance? Both of the aforementioned magazines have nice print, fabulous pics, but very little to read...

I would think a more "wordy" magazine would do well.

Am I the only one who thinks this? Most of the time I just bypass forza/cavallino at the bookstore, and still pick up the porsche magazines...

    Bo,
Try posting in the European section...maybe there is a better magazine there. There really isn't anything else in North America. Consider this; magazines make money from advertisers (and to a lesser extent from subscribers)...there are really not that many Ferrari owners out there, which keeps the audience small, and the potential "market" for advertisers also small. Let's face it, how many Tubi Style exhausts or BMC air filters can the Ferrari owner's purchase in a given year. Hence all the watch, airplane and cigar ads, as even non-Ferrari owners may buy those.

I like your idea of a more technical oriented magazine, but the potential audience for such a magazine (advertisers and subscribers) makes it unlikely to happen.

You know, we have so many talented folks on this board, has anyone ever submitted an article? I am sure that they would print an article on "How to change a clutch," How to change fluids", "How to do brake upgrades."

    Thoughts?

I agree with you about Forza and Cavallino. They have a difficult mission because they're so infrequent. However, this month's TOP GEAR is devoted to Ferrari's, and is superb.

    Forza,

Try the prancing horse. It's the official FCA quarterly magazine. Bill Badurski, the technical editor, always have multipage, detailed articles on repair and maintenance. Latest one is about brake job. I remember Bill posts on FerrariChat but not lately.

What would be good is a nice 350-500 pg guide on 'rebuilding and maintaining a 3*8" - not just an article, but an exhaustive, easy to read book. Plenty of illustrations for every step.

For me if I get like a Chilton's manual I'm stuck cause it's rather vague at times, especially for the 'mechanically' challenged.

A good Ferrari magazine is tough.

I mean, what "news" is there to report and analyze? In the Ferrari world, "news" is limited, and information is murky at best.

What "gossip" is there to inspire lengthy articles from various points of view?

The best Ferrari "magazine" in my opinion is FerrariChat. :D

Looking at all the posts on this subject there aren't any two that say the same thing. No wonder there isn't a magazine that can satisfy everyone.

Cavallino is the best at providing interesting historical information that is current and new car info. They have the best photography of all the magazines on Ferrari and the magazine is printed to a high standard.

Forza is a magazine that tries hard to cater to all Ferrari enthusiasts on a range of subjects but doesn't have the credibility of Cavallino IMO. Both magazines have too much advertising and a small amount of real content.

The last is the Prancing Horse. Its published by the FCA and covers their events best but isn't published often enough to be taken seriously as relates to current information.

Each one has their own merit but the best place for up to date information is boards like this. There is no replacement for the information that gets turned up by the hundreds or thousands of members who post here.

Like the posts have been saying:

Cavallino: great photographs, excellent historical data,...nice resale value!
Forza: diversified content, also nice photos, bi-monthly publication.
    Advertising: a necessary evil.

    BTW, I'm subscribed to both.

As far a technically-oriented publication aimed at DYI's goes, not enough DYI's around to warrant it. Besides...there's F-Chat!

Couldn't agree more, although subscribe to both but do feel that they lack information that all the Porsche's magazines have.
But don't get me wrong, they are both good enjoyable reads.

Cavallino itself really is about the early cars, but recently they started two new magazines: Flat12 and Otto. Up to now I haven't seen any of these, but since they both deal with serie production cars I expect they will be more technically orientated.

Forza and Cavallino are both good pubs, virtues and vices already well discussed here. Ads are a necessary evil; I for one find many of the ads interesting and have gotten plenty of leads and info. These two mags are also generally tailored to the very high end collector and new car markets, with occasional special-interest articles on production cars.

The thing I see lacking is a niche-market Ferrari pub for owners/enthusiasts in the lower to mid end of the spectrum- '60s/'70s/80's V12 2+2's, 365 GTC/4's, 308's, 328's, 348's, Mondials, 456's, even higher end but very remotely affordable production cars like 330/365 GTC, Daytona, 246 Dino, 550 Maranello. We're the salt of the Ferrari Earth!

As another poster noted, Tom Yang's board and Fchat fill in very well in this area, but a mag would also be nice.

Forza and Cavallino are great at what they do. Neither is a technical repair guide, although as I recall early Forzas had a kind of Q&A section.

For the Q&A, this is the place to be.

Do a search, read off the screen, copy the pages and distill down with Adobe, and you've got yourself a nice little guidebook.

I've done it for the Dino stuff, and it's like a bible of information.

I like them both, but I agree they are nothing compared to F-Chat regarding info.
They are both heavy on the ads, but then again what magazine today isn't.

True, both Cavallino and Forza have a good share of ads, although Forza more than an issue of Cavallino. It's also about WHAT kind of ads appear in magazines. The latest issues of Forza for instance carry ads on a lot of aftermarket parts for F-cars and even coffins... yes, coffins. I mean, come on!
