I was talking to this guy that had a 308gtb and instead of rebuilding his worn engine he got another 308 engine that had recently been rebuilt and replaced the original engine with the reco one.He told me it was cheaper that way.I might be considering doing the same thing as I eventually need to rebuild. My question is does doing this affect future resale value? Please feel free to chime in as all replies are appreciated. Thanks in advance

People like matching numbers and 'no stories'.

Also a rebuild that you didn't oversee is a bit of an unknown.

I don't think matching numbers is an issue with 308's. I don't think it will affect the value either way. Just my $.02

I agree, this should be an issue!
Unless there's a service history backed with receits and proof they belong to that engine I would run away.

Howelse do you know you're not buying an even crappier engine than the one you're replacing?

numbers matching is probably not an issue now, but if someone's buying with collectability in mind, eventually numbers matching will be come an issue. although, you will probably have to wait another 20-30 years for that.

    308s don't have matching numbers.......to start with.

It might effect your ability to obtain a Heritage Certificate from the Factory, that's all I can think of..........

They confirm components within a certain range of known serial numbers.

I've always been curious as one of my '77 308s blew up under warranty and got a new motor. I wonder if it'll pass!

Since I have a '78 GTS...what circumstances (which I hope I NEVER get to) would lead to an engine rebuild?

Thanking you in advance for your help.

Timing belt failure comes to mind, that or oiling problems from track use.....or 100,000 carefully driven miles!

my euro 78 GTS dropped a valve 10 years ago. had to completely rebuild the engine, and did the transaxle as long as we were in there.

    It does make a difference.

I have a heritage certificate No. 1001 from Ferrari. To get it, the chassie number, the engine number and gearbox number must match.

Well, they 'match' in that they are concurrent, but unlike the older cars, you don't have (using my example) VIN #22127 doesn't have engine #22127 and tranny number #22127............

Your engine number is XXXXX, and tranny number XXXX. Correct?

Ferrari stopped the practice of stamping chassis numbers on engine blocks (i.e. matching numbers) in the early 70s. This should not be an issue for anything newer than that.

Tranny numbers never did match up to anything else.

Many 308 engines were replaced under warrantee by Ferrari. The one in mine was.

I like matching numbers, but if I like that car.....as long as its factory original, who cares.

Yes, its sometimes cheaper just replcing the engine than rebuilding it, just depends on what kind of work you need. If you can afford it. I suggest replace it and then tinker with the old one, so you have a space should the other go down.

Thanks for all of your replies. It seems it's six of one or half a dozen of another.I'm looking at approx.$AUD15000 for a rebuild and if I could get another engine for considerably less than that and know what condition its in it might be worth it.My engine is pretty smoky under acceleration and drinking oil at a quick enough rate.I know this next question has come up before but if I go for a rebuild is it worth staying worth staying with stock pistons or higher comp. pistons. Thanks again and please keep responding.

Well, I priced a 308 Carbed engine and it was $7000 - $8000 USD, complete with carbs and everything past the tranny. This was trhough Italian Race and Desings, Butch Hooper. Price depends on avalibility and of course condition. The payment might be a little more, but its a heck of a headache. I know I am currently looking for the tools to reseat my valves, unfortunately its a special tool, discontinued by Ferrari might I add. So, I am stuck on my valve job or until I can find the tool or something that will work instead. Sometimes the extra money is worth the headache. Then you can rebuild your old motor at your lesure and finances. If you get into a crunch, you can always sell one of the motor or you have a spare if one goes down. Just a thought.

Stock pistons were 8.0/1 making it a 'world car'.......

You can go higher than that if you want to go Premium grade fuel. I like running on Regular grade myself, sneeking my car's fuel consumption in with the Fleet trucks............... LOL!

Shhhhhhhhhh, I know you guys can keep a secret! ;)

From the paperwork, mine scattered around 6K miles, but he was late with service intervals, per the Coupon Book.....when they say bring it back at 600 miles, I think they meant it.

He was lucky they covered him, IMO.....

Then later on, his luck changed.......
