Oh....this is a no-brainer: the 512 TR is definitely a better buy for the buck. Break it down spaghetti heads....on a per-cylinder basis the price is 1/12th the aquisition cost of a 355 divided by the gas mileage and then ammortized on a miles-driven per year basis. You then factor in the marginal cost per mile against the derivitive coefficient of the tire pressure and your answer is f-in clear!!!!!!! That's not even taking into consideration the aerodynamics and decibel level of the exhaust. duhhh....... But seriously, let's get something straight: we buy stocks speculating an appreciation for our money invested. We buy bonds, some real estate and other legitimiate "investments" as a means to build our worth. These are real investments: we expect a return and appreciation on our money invested. Ferrari's are NOT about these such financial investments. Ferrari's are all about denying our age, reducing hair loss and dealing with sexual inadequecies while all the time feeling young and successful. Then again, Freud never owned a Ferrari What it comes down to is this: nobody wants to blow money on something stupid or frivilous. Come on guys...show of hands: how many of us bought these bad-ass toys and lulled our wives into some kind of bizarre rational about how "yes, they cost a ****load, BUT it's an investment"???? I did. Damn right I ordered the code Red/tan... I said "A Jaguar, BMW or any other sports car is just going to depreciate down to nothing. After 5 years and the end of the warranty.....our potential $70k is down to nothing. BUT the Ferrari will retain much of its value AND it's a true exotic". Ferrari's don't get worn down and sold as junk: they're collected and admired. So we're spending a bit more, but we're actually mitigating our losses AND who knows....15 years from now, with the cost of new Ferrari's being so high...it may just sell for more then we bought it for" I held a straight face...she bought it. But let's not kid ourselves....at some time she'll play her card and buy something expensive and I don't get to say **** about it. That's life. It's Enzo's world....we just get to play in it. I say....buy whichever car makes you stiffer...don't confuse the issue with messy terms like "investment".
Autocar did a test on normal production Ferraris in the last 20 years and voted the 512TR as the best Ferrari. So you can't go wrong.

FWIW... The 355 out accelerates the 512 both 0-60 and 1/4 mile. It weighs 150KG less than the 512. The 512 really is a looker, that classy F Car look. I have driven both and really do like the 355 more. A little more crisp with feel and lighter to the touch. I do like the torque of the 512. However, to each his own.
Get a 308 of a car to invest in. It must be clean..and a GTB fibergalss car. These will be the Ferrari's to buy in the future
I agree with what others have said: NOT AN INVESTMENT! I you can afford one, buy it and enjoy. Invest in stocks, bonds, gold, etc.
It's a car -buy what you like and drive it till the wheels fall off - invest in realestate, stocks .... Actually if you do buy a Ferrari that has bottomed out in value i.e. a 308, you should be able to figure on getting your money back out of it should you decide to sell - that is of course less maintenance, insurance etc.
I was not looking to buy one for investment potential, just curious as to which one if either would be worth more down the road than the other. For me personally I will probably buy a CS. I had planned on going to FoH this week since I was in town for the holidays but I have had alot happen in a short period of time.... First I developed a slight sinus infection as I usually do from the weather change from CA to TX....Then my slight infection became worse, I developed a fever and it turned into strep throat(have'nt left the house for over a week except to goto DR).....Then to top it all off my grandmother had a stroke last night My fever has broke and the DR told me I should be up again by Monday so depending on my grandmothers health I might get back on track next week and be able to make something happen on the CS
gary, you bought a modern ferrari that actually is a decent ferrari investment. definition of "ferrari investment": the car you buy that depreciates the least or maintains its' value best!
I am psychic, ha ha. Since I got my 328 GTS back in October I have been asked to pay for 2 diamond rings. On top of this, I bought her 2 diamond rings before I got my car just to get her in the good mood and never thought that another would be on its way. Who says that maintenance on 328 is cheap??
As stated many times here, neither is an investment - however, the 512 is more collectable because: 1. 12 cylinder 2. Fewer units produced. If you want a daily driver, the 355 is a good well balanced car. Their prices are dropping faster than a pair of Paris Hilton panties...good time to pick up one - especially if the 30K belt service is fresh.
Like said before neither is a good investment car. If you want an Fcar that will make you money buy something from the 50s 60s or early 70s. As far as the more modern cars go buy something you will enjoy and drive the most. Buy it to enjoy it, not to profit off of it.
You ain't seen nothing yet. Try to get another car and see how much the diamond factor comes into play.
I think the 355 is better looking, but the TR is definitely the better investment by far, they built way fewer of them. -Doug
I've been looking at this 512TR last couple weeks now and I think she smells the plot as she has been dragging me in to see a few huge 'stones' that would cost me $$$$$. I think that's her way of saying 'don't even think about it!!'
