    I should have posted this picture before I tried to hammer it back into shape. Is this common for the CV boot flange to be disfigured? I just ordered new ones along with new Lobro CV joint. The new ones have the boot connected to the flange already. I guess they allow for a lot more travel. Any comments are appreciated.

    The bottom picture is a picture of a lift I bought on EBay a few months back. Just perfect for my garage. Not bad for $1,299.00!!!

    Don't know how common it is, but I've seen several cars where the half shaft had swung far enough to dent the flange.

    FWIW I removed all my CV's on the weekend and I found all the boot flanges to be round.

    I love the lift. Do you happen to have a link as to where to buy one?

    The boot flange look's and im sure it is the same as v/w transporter or ford granada type and pleanty of other manufactures use it to,when crimping the boot strap dont over do it as the tool can apply great pressure to the strap, this can distort this boot flange as it's just a pressed piece of tin,

    I will have to take more pictures. First, both sides where like this. If I where to move the axle inside of there you could see where it would have made contact to do this type of damage.

    Most likely cause is dropping the axle when disconnecting it from the hubs. The outer end needs to be supported before undoing the last bolt.

    I agree with Gerrit, a drooping axle can cause the lip to distort, it did for me, I just tapped back into shape, been two years now and no problems with the CV boots falling off.

    Bent flanges are very common, as Gerrit & Mark noted, it's caused by the axle shaft hitting the inside of the flange when the other end is unbolted and left to hang down farther than the normal range of motion of the suspension. Usually you can bent it back but sometimes the boot won't seal again if the flange still has a kink in it. They are cheap and easy to replace and a shiney new flange looks good too.

    Dropping the axle will definitly bend the flange. I've seen it on all cars with this type of 'euro' cv joint setup. Ferrari, VW, Porsche, Maserati, all of em. Replace it. They can cause a small imbalance, and the boot will sometimes even come off with the clamp still attatched because of the bend. Sometimes the bend can look so symmetrical that it looks 'factory'.
