I am having a tough time seeing my timing marks on the flywheel. I was able to locate the TDC mark for cylinder number one. Just for reference I marked this location on my harmonic balancer by using some fingernail polish (my wife's fingernail polish, thank you) plus I added a fixed mark on the timing belt cover with another dab of fingernail polish. I now need to located the position of TDC for cylinder number 5. Am I correct in assuming that I can mark a spot 90 degrees counter-clockwise from the location of my other mark on the harmonic balancer as a good starting point in trying to locate to correct mark on the flywheel? Any thoughts would be helpful, or is there a better way to located these marks? Thanks.

Your flywheel should have PM 1-4 which is the TDC mark for cylinders 1 and 4, similarly there is a mark PM 5-8 on your flywheel for cylinders 5 and 8.

Your theory for marking the harmonic balancer is correct, however you can always remove #5 spark plug and with a dial guage determine TDC exactly.

As a guide the picture is of the markings for a UK flywheel, the TDC marks are the same as US, but the other marks will be different.

    Hope this helps

One reason the markings can be hard to see is if the flywheel has been skimmed a couple of times (when the clutch has been replaced) the markings are destroyed.

Had this problem with my '76 GTB where only 1/2 the letters were still visible, so I replaced the flywheel at the next clutch change.

I painted the PM-1-4 mark with white, and the PM-5-8 with red. This makes life very easy when setting the timing with the dual-distributor cars. Even with a very thin flywheel, you should still be able to find the marks scribed into the edge of the flywheel through the window in the top of the bellhousing.

My flywheel was marked by the PO with red nail polish on the 1-4 and 5-8. Also they marked 7DBTDC so it was easy to set up. Since I had 1 dizzy set up with 2 pick ups I only need to time 1 dizzy so the 1-4 is all I look for.
