Better car?? Geesh, the red one only has 2 wheel drive I love my '93 Carrera 4 too & think a well sorted out 964 series is a great bargain if properly shopped. I sure wouldn't bash a G50 trans Carrera or a 993 either though.
Before I bought my S2000 i came close top picking up a 964 (91C4) and did some research on them. After getting a lot of good advice I came away thinking that the 964 reminds me a lot of the 348 in that the earlier versions had more problems which got straightened out in the later years of the model run and a lot of people pointed out something which is true the fact that by now most problems have been sorted out by previous owners. Major problems I found out about were on cars with a build date prior to 5/13/92 they used a Freudenberg dual mass flywheel which proved unreliable usually going at around 50K the replacement was a Luk flywheel and oil leaks were the head meets the block. Other common problems were not too bad mostly small stuff.
But I happen to like trailing throttle oversteer. Yes the Pbug is easy to drive (maybe a little tricky to launch quickly), but the Ferrari is much more emotional. Even my wife's life-long-die-hard Porsche fan step father thinks the Mondial is more involving. Pbugs are great cars. I just want something else...
What about a 968? A local broker has one here: Porsche : 968 Cabriolet 1995 PORSCHE 968 CABRIOLET 6-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION Miles: 84959 Doors: 2 doors Transmission: Manual Interior: Black Engine: 6 - Cyl. I've got a customer with a mint silver 993 with 30k miles , 6 speed for $30k. I've been keeping this one under my hat for a while but have other priorities right now. PM me. DFW area.
Hey Dale, the CD console can be removed with the console delete kit from from the GT3. Costs about $100 and is easy to install. I put one in mine because I like the look, (seperates the dash like older Porsches) but most tall people have them to solve the problem you mention. Houston also has some great weather for convertibles! Heated seats and a great A/C make this a year round top down car (OK, August is a little hot), but lots of folks buy hardtops and keep them on year round. The G-50 Carrera's and 993's are the most sought after, but the market is filled with Boxsters, so you could end up getting a lot of car for your money.
The best iteration of one of the most underrated sports/GT car: the 944 Here's a link to a discussion about what to look for: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=191494&highlight=968
No, I agree with you on the Boxster, particularly over the newer 911 or 996 or whatever they call it. Porsche has really put themselves in a box (sorry I couldn't help myself) with the market position of the Boxster v. the 911. A new Boxster S costs $60k, which is $15k too much. A new 911 costs $80k, which is also $15k too much. Dale

Sorry, it looks like a nice car, but I would prefer the 87-89 G-50 tranny, of which there are a number here in Houston. Dale
964s 90-94, the first 964 C4 might have been out in '89 - someone will correct me. The very early cars had some sort of difficulty, but I raced a '93 and currently own a '93 cab and have found them to be bulletproof. Check, of course, the model specific forums on rennlist.com. OTOH, if you prefer the look of the 80s cars - that's what it's all about! Good luck.
You might want to check the classifieds in Panorama, the glossy, official Porsche Club magazine. I'd take your time, there are a lot of these cars out there at any given time, though I agree about the difficulty of finding a plain Jane coupe.
Yes, the 964 did come out in late 89 and it did have a lot of problems. A lot of porsche guys call it the "orphan porsche" because it was not a good car. That is why you can get them pretty cheap. Strick with the 993, for a bit more than a 88 or early 89 you can get one. Thats the problem now with the 89 an older, for a few grand more you can get a much better car. The 993 will not go down in value much at this point, a lot of guys want the last of the air cooled cars. vince.
The 964 is just funny looking. The bumpers are too bulbous looking. They also had some issues with valve guides I believe. Ive had lots of p-cars. The absolute best ones I have ever experienced were the '88-'89 3.2 Carreras. Those cars are built like tanks. I drove an '88 for 3 years as a daily and sold it with 145k miles on it. At that mileage, the car drove perfectly with not a single little squeek or rattle from anything. It was 100% solid. Some of those cars developed valve guide issues, but if the car had the problem it would have been long since fixed by now. The build quality on that '88 was the best of any car I have ever owned. The 993 nor the Boxster is in the same league. The Boxster A/C is very surprising. It is AWESOME. With the top down but the side windows up and the A/C on maximum the cockpit stays COOL. I was amazed at this when I first test drove one of these cars. I can ride around with the top down in 95 degree heat and yet I dont sweat. My hair does get messed up... There are tons of cars for sale on the PCA national website. If your not a PCA member and you want to browse the ads anyway, PM me and Ill send you my id and password. Terry
BTW, I'm guilty of commiting the cardinal crime when seeking car advice -- namely, I didn't spell out what I'm looking for. 1. It needs to be a daily driver, i.e., it will start when I'm in a hurry to go someplace. 2. Fortunately, most of my daily driving takes place in the Xburbs so not much bumper-to-bumper "freeway" driving. 3. I want a sporty feel, but not too sporty, i.e., if I give someone a ride, I don't want them to feel like they have been on the highway to Baghdad. (This is the problem with the Spec Miata. I enjoy it, but passengers don't.) I don't ever plan on driving this car even close to 5/10s on the street. I also don't plan on tracking it. (Guess where the Spec Miata is headed?) But do want to have something that is fun to row through the gears and dodge all the monster SUVs that we have in Texas. 4. Because it's hot in Houston (duh!), the A/C has to work. Because I like the 87-89 cars, this is what I'm looking at first. They fit all the above, except for #4. However www.griffiths.com supposedly has a kit that will fix this problem. I have heard that the 89-93 cars had issues. See requirement one. I have also heard that the 993 cars are great, except I do like the style of the 87-89 cars better. And yes, like the London Bridge, Boxsters and the newer 911s are falling down. Porsche is digging itself a huge hole by building s-o-o-o many new cars. Hell, the new 911s are already being discounted! Any one who buys a new Porsche better plan on keeping it, otherwise you are looking at a huge haircut. They are great cars. Porsche is just building too many. So yes, a Boxster S may be the way to go. I have heard some horror stories about rear main seals, but I'm guessing that if a specific car was gonna blow, it would have blown by now. Dale
I sold my 993 C4S last year and have missed it ever since. They're great cars but not for everybody. The 996 and new 997 are lightyears ahead in terms of comfort and ergonomics but we can't help that "we like what we like" can we? Dale, the Boxster S sounds like the car you are looking for. Very good performance and excellent handling. Very good a/c and very reliable. The RMS issues (rear main seals) were an issue on earlier cars that (although they still exist) is not as prevalent on the newer cars. Anyway, I'm actively in the market for a 993 coupe so I'd appreciate any leads. The one LightGuy knows about sounds interesting.....
So you're telling me that my 964 is also an unloved car? Damn, maybe I do have a problem. Should I seek out help?
If you're looking at 968s, take a gander over into 928 land too. Great cars. A bit on the heavy side, but very well balanced. Slap on a rear-muffler bypass, and enjoy upwards of 5.4L of German V-8 bliss. So long as the timing belt doesn't snap, you'll be in great shape. The electronics are a bit complicated and electrical gremlins procreate like crazy, but damn I love that V-8 noise. 93-95 GTS is the ultimate, and you'll pay for it. Upwards of 50k for a manual tranny. And expect to pay 15-20% extra for any model with a manual, since so few were produced in relation to automatics
No no no.... you know better than that! ALL 911s are loved cars. There is no such thing as a "bad" 911. The 911 is probably the greatest sports car ever built and its certainly the most successful production based racecar ever raced. Saying the 964 is not as great as a 3.2 Carrera or a 993 or an early 911S is similar to pointing out that Heidi Klum has a better ass than Kate Moss. Neither is ugly or bad..... (Kate Moss... horrible example but for the life of me I couldnt think of another super models name I could spell at the moment!!!) Terry
I still would take Flav's sloppy seconds...mmmmm Engaged to Seal today PS, Erik, Spice Glider won't allow you their help, sorry. My wife won't let me date either. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I don't think its so much that she won't let me date. Its more the fact that I can't afford to. As she has told me many times before, no woman is worth 75% of my net worth. Even her. And that is what she would walk out with...
