Hey Guys! Hope everyone had a great New Year! Mine has started off great except for this transmission issue. I have had my TR for a year now, 4th owner. It has 18000 miles on it. I was getting on the interstate the other day and was shifting up through the gears normally and when I selected 4th it stayed there! The linkage is good all the way from the shifter back to the transmission case. I am able to move all the linkage around by hand from the linkage right in front of the case. The shifter moves freely and correctly. I can't put the shifter in any particular gear, it will only move freely in the neutral position now. No other gear is selectable. I may be wordy in this description, I want to be sure I cover everything incase anyone has any suggestions. It was a tough drive home in 4th gear! The car is on stands right now and I also noticed that the differential is REALLY tight. Even if the car is in gear I think the other wheel should spin freely.

I feel like I should pull the transmission and send it to a shop for repair. Anyone have any suggestions on a shop that can service a TR transmission?

    Thanks!!

    PD

The limited-slip clutch packs in the differential are fairly tight so don't fret yet about the differential -- on my TR, when in-gear (engine off) and with the rear wheels off the ground, it takes ~85 ft-lbs to turn one rear wheel and make the other rear wheel spin in the opposite direction.

For the stuck in-gear problem -- do you mean that the shift lever in the cabin is in the 4th position in the gate and can be moved to neutral and back into 4th but nowhere else? And if so, when you put the lever in neutral does it go into neutral or stay in 4th? I believe there are mechanical "interlocks" inside the transmission (to absolutely prevent selecting two gears at once) so if something in the linkage has loosened or separated while in 4th gear it would prevent selecting any other gear -- regardless, it sounds like you (or your mechanic) will have to check the linkages both inside and outside of the gearbox :(

I'm with Steve. It sounds as though the selector finger in the trans has become seperated from the selector forks while the trans was in 4th. You will need to take the side cover off and see what happened. It will be a simple job for your mechanic, it can be done with the motor in place.
