Sorry for the new thread, but you guys are very helpful and seem a treasure trove of knowledge! My question is - what is the going price for a red (previously yellow) 1979 RHD carb 308 GTS? Its got 30k miles (verifyable by a number of MOT's) It has a fairly full service history (also aliging with MOT's and milage) Has recent full cam-belt change, new clutch, sports exhaust Good interior, not too worn at all, but not concours Exterior paint looks very good, as does roor BUT, has rust bubbling through in a number of places (not through yet, but definately there - 1) bottom of both doors, 2) sill below doors, 3) pannels in front of rear wheel below swage line and 4) rear corners above the swage line and fibreglass rear valance - the wheel arches seem fine The rust seems to be worst at the rear corners (#4 above, with an area of 2-3 inches by 1 inch where the paint is raising, the rest are sort of dispersed bubbles) Also, how bad does the rust sound, how much is it likely to cost to fix and where should I consider having it done? Guys, thanks in advance for your advice - I am serious about buying this car (I have just sold my 3.2 Carrera to buy a 308) so your the time taken to respond will not be wasted, so please help out! Thanks Dave
i would have a stab at £16k - £18k, privately purchased. £18 -£20k from a specialist. subject to a good compression test result, professional inspection and a good 'gut feeling' cheers, d
Dave's spot on with the prices (if there isnt too much rust) a decent specialist will give you a good idea of whats needed rust wise when they do a PPI
Given that it is likely to cost about £5k to replace the rusty sections and give the car a full respray (Spoke to some specialists today - see other thread), what is the value of the car? In other words, what is the UK value of a shiny, non-rust 308 GTS with about 35k miles, with fair interior and moderately complete service history and recent major work done?
Depends on the market place barometer: how desperate is the seller to sell, and how keen is the buyer to buy ? offer £12.5k cash, and test the water.
I fully understand market dynamics and the concept of supply and demand, but are you saying that the current market price of good 308GTS's is below £20k?! (i.e. £12.5k for low milage car plus £5k to sort rust and have baremetal respray) Most good 308's seem to be on the market around £30k, especially from dealers. PS Would be great if he accepted £12.5k - perhaps I will get you to talk to him
Two on Ebay starting at £ 20 - don't forget if you're quoted £ 5 for the body work either they're bound not to have mentioned vat or something - just like building work assume the final bill will be more - having said that a 308 is a great car - very easy to own - but remember you're buying for pleasure not investment
These ones look nice, but a bit higher mileage, but says it was a concourse winner, so hopefully no rust! http://www.ferrariownersclub.co.uk/sales/sales.asp 25K This one look ok, as well. http://www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/carpage.php?id=929&topbar=0 I guess most people would accept an offer 1-2,000 less than asking.
