Thank you BigTex, I appreciate your advice! I'll keep the board updated as to when I sell the car, price, etc.
Bernardo, your car seems very nice. i am on my 2nd 308, and i prefer the early car, i would have boight your 79 if i was on the market, as i prefer GTB's over the "S" and i love black interior. i want a 512bb, my GTB will be for sale in the spring as well, but only if i get what i want for it. you have a great 308, dont get too down about it it not selling right away.
ok, that HAD to be for the newer cars. no way it was for a 308. i am a 5 year guy myself. i have yet to see one owned long enough by anyone i know for any signifigant amount of miles to put on them that the belts were due for mileage alone. i would not budge on the price if it were mine, but it depends on why and how bad he needs to sell it. most times when my cars are for sale, i could care less if anyone buys them or not. a 512bb is in my future, so price points may vary. but i prefer GTB's and black interior is a plus for me. if i did not have my 77 i would have been all over this car . a 308gt4 and or a 365 2+2 are on my list as well.
They stripped the cats, air pumps and thermo muffler/header wrap.... That's a start right there. Doesn't mention '77 cams but that would be a good bet as well if they were searching for lost HP.......
I suggest that you give Dave Brennan a call. His number is: 775 843 2549. He owns Sierra Clasic Cars, in Reno, Nev. No promises, but he may be able to help you. He's usually able to come up with a solution that is amenable to all concerned. Bob Wassam
"Any idea what was done to that engine to get 208 rwhp out of it when it came stock at 205 crank?" I was wondering the same thing!
I thought the carb cars all had 230 - 240 HP and didn't drop to 205 until the CIS system was installed in the 1980 model year.
Bernardo, You are not too far off...but I would say you are "in the ballpark" on your pricing. I would say that you need to deduct about $2k for the A/C fix (since most will have to seek out an A/C specialist). So some where around $24k sounds about right. Good luck, it looks to be a nice car. Though not original, most of your mods are reasonable, and easily changed back, so should be a real negative. Dave
Thank you for all your input! These cars, without emissions equipment, from what I read produced close to 250hp at the crank, so close to 205-210 at the rear wheels. The engine is pretty much stock apart from, as BigTex noted, the stripped cats, air pumps and thermo muffler/header wrap. The car also has slightly larger mainjets. When we dyno'd the car the first time, after fixing the ignition, it was revving fine up to 7k rpms, but above that it was starved for fuel. Larger weber mainjets were ordered and installed and the second time we dyno'd the car, it revved smoothly all the way to the red line, producing on the dyno 208 hp at the rear wheels. That's all I know, but everything else in the engine is stock. Also, thanks bwassam for the contact, I'll give Dave a call and see what he says. Usually dealers will quote around $22k for a car like this, and I'm not really desperate to sell.
"These cars, without emissions equipment, from what I read produced close to 250hp at the crank, so close to 205-210 at the rear wheels" I'd sure like to see a dyno sheet on it, as stock, even without emissions equipment, your numbers should be more like 175 - 180 rwhp for your year model.
On the AC if it's just the compressor it isn't to expensive. If the hoses to the front of the car are bad replacement is a pain - and there is a good chance they are after all these years. Then the ~$2K is a good starting point. Of course, if the hoses leak you can just keep charging 134 whenever it needs it since it is cheap and readily available. Looks like a good car. With zero feedback maybe that discourages bidders on EBAY. I'd try selling the car elsewhere- just need to find someone looking for a B. Maybe try ferrariads.com or the ferrari market place website.
They're full of crap. The 308 has always been 5-years and 30k (which is also WAY conservative.). He should have to deduct NOTHING for the major service which is not due for 3-1/2 years from now. Except the AC the car looks good. The AC can be fixed for less than $400 in parts if you have an sence about doing the work yourself. $1000 at the most if a mechanic has to do it. Sell it in the spring. Leave your buy it now price the same. You should be able to get close to that.
I'll keep selling it at the price I'm trying to get, fortunately I have no payments on it and I don't really need the money. I'll try to get the dyno sheets scanned and post them. I just talked to the guy at the shop and he remembers 204 at the rear wheels...I won't bet on the 208 any more, but it was over 200hp at the rear wheel FOR SURE.
Yeah, FORGET the 1.5 miles interval. That is greed and nonesense; borders on "criminal". No way. A service 1.5 years ago is "fresh" in my book, so that is very good.
Bernardo: I'm a newbie, looking to purchase a GTB in the next year or so. I followed the auction and was surprised that the Buy it Now price (which from your description of the car, is very reasonable) was not grabbed. Had I been ready to purchase a GTB now (I have storage issues that need to be resolved first) I would have made the trip to VA for a serious look. Don't budge on the price...very fair in my view. Joe
I was guessing the early cams too, but didn't see it mentioned. Itr was the only thing I could think off that could bump the power that much...thought I'd ask.
Yea, '77 cams are included in the '77s at NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE! LOL! Sorry for thread hijack, we're just spoofin'! Another thing to keep in mind, especially with Ferraris is that the engines have a HUGE latitude for variance. Who knows if someone along the way dropped some clandestine Group 4 engine mods on it..It wouldn't even show up until an Owner went to dyno the thing! "Shoot, Marge...I got me a STRONG RUNNIN' '79 here, fo' sure!"
My '78 GTS is stripped of emissions and cats. It has an ANSA exhaust. Crane solid state ignition and properly functioning distributor advance. It is a strong runner but only pulled an honest 176.5 RWHP on the dyno last spring. That equates to about 205 HP at the flywheel. The highest out of all of the 308's there. If you are laying down 205 at the rear wheels then somebody has switched cams on that engine or at least reindexed the stock ones to European event timing and did some serious rejetting and fine tuning. There isn't much you can do on the outside of these engines, including jetting, that will net you almost 30 extra horsepower above a stock '78/79. Sounds like a good runner. Wish I had those 30 extra horses. By the way. If your representation of the car is accurate I would not take a penny less than your "buy it now" price. I would if I didn't have one already.
OK, the shop finally faxed over the dyno sheet on my car: 204.5 rwhp and 174.5 ft-lbs of torque. From what I know, the engine is stock with the exhaust changes I mentioned earlier and the fact that it has slightly larger main jets. Before jetting the engine, the first time we dynoed the car, it would start to break up (starved for fuel) at around 7k rpms, and produced about 175 rwhp if I recall. After we ordered the new mainjets and retuned the car, we got the reults I mentioned. I will post a picture of the dyno sheet today, I need to get it scanned. Thanks for all your comments!
Hey guys, I thought I'd attach the dyno sheet for my '79 carb'd 308 (as a .pdf file). 204.5 rwhp and 174.5 ft-lbs torque. What do you think?? Thanks, Bernardo Image Unavailable, Please Login
